It's no secret it is HOT! I have my best gyp bred and I usually have pups in the fall/winter but this is an exception. The wife is not big on bringing them in the house. How do you guys keep pups alive and cool in the summer? Was going to for sure have a fan on them but not sure if it's enough. Ideas and suggestions welcome. Thanks in advane

You can try a fan. That's what I used to do but it is better if you could bring them inside. Real young pups cannot regulate their body heat & even tho they will pull apart from the other pups because they are hot, they soon become chilled & will die. Might have to bribe the wifey with something. Wink

Heat rises of course. So depending on your using as a whelping box, put a couple small fans in the top with some hole cut out to draw the stagnant hot air out and pull fresh air in and a bigger fan blowing air into the entry way of the box. If you have an open top box, just keep air circulating over them and keep them in the shade at all times or as much as possible. U could get fancy and rig up a water mister to keep the cool, similar to a swamp cooler

Thanks guys. The pen she will be in is shaded all day long and the box I have rigged up for her is very well vented and is rigged with fan in one end and open on the other so the air will be blowing across them. Hopefully all goes well really looking forward to this litter.

I have 4 day old pups right now. Started off with 11 have 3 left. This heat is deadly. I have them on the front porch now with a fan on them constantly and I don't know if that is enough. Good luck is all I can say.

In the hot summer a fan is needed for air movement...I use a plywood floor with 1x12 pine boards and cut them to make a 4 x 4 ft square where the mama dog can climb over...the square box will have the bottom gapped about a 1/2" for air movement and drainage...I also have a 2x4 frame nailed to the corners and they stand about 2 ft above the 1x12 inch boards...I then put a top on it like boards or tarp...I then lean a 4x4 ft plywood to create a gap between the roof and the plywood leaning...that gap stops quite a bit of the heat and most of the heat radiated will blow over the inner roof...I also use the water hose to wash out the floor...I try to do this twice a day to cool the pups off...the floor needs to be clean and dry most of the time...but cleaning/washing it in the hottest part of the day will help to cool them down...the fan will dry the floor but the vaporizing water creates a cooling effect...

Listen to the pups...if they are whimping loudly you can bet they are hot...that is the time to cool them...I check on them when I can...

Coil up a water hose up in the bottom of your box run the exit end out on the ground. Put a valve on the end of it so you can control the amount of water running out. The water should be cooler coming out of the ground and help. With this and a fan you should not have any problem.

I bought the cheap mist system from tractor supply for mine; raised all eight without any problems. The whelping pen is shaded as well. Pups are currently 11 weeks old.

Thanks for the input and the ideas in the process this week of setting everything up. Got a fan and a mister system plus some other small things I think should help them out. Then sit back and let her have them. Should be here about August 16
