A while back I tried to chime in on a topic that had to do with some things I know a little about not that I know it all but know a lot then I got the old while your young so you don't know much how does one know if a young person knows nothing if they know nothing of the person...me I joined the military at 17 at 18 went to scout sniper school in ft.bliss(yes I know its not ft.benning) at 19 I was deployed to Iraq an explosion had Walter reed hospital put rods n screw's in my spine I have killed a lot of "game" in my life i hunted and help my dad with dogs from when I could talk till getting my own pups from him at 10 we ran dogs almost every day when he was done with work (finder holders or as we called them trackah grabahs) when I got in to high school I ran dogs as much as I could my family has a 28k cattle ranch I have seen dogs breed to having to cull dogs when I was 10. I have hunting every wild game on the big island my little brother was with me when I shot my first goat at 8 with my grandpas 30-30 he got when he came back from Vietnam he was also with me when I got my first mouflon he got his first 20 minutes after mine my 3 year old son was also there hunting with us  the size of the pigs dont always matter a rank 150 pound boar is faster and from what I have seen worse tusk size(dog killing) then a 400 pound boar I know 50 year old men that have hunter for 40 years I also know 50 year old men that have hunted for 2 so age has no meaning if you don't know the person ALOHA

Hyan...you are right...the younger you are it seems you can actually gain more experience beyond your years...I believe my biggest learning curve  was between 8 and 15 or so...hunted dogs most every day and sometimes twice...I whooped and hollered, yipped and hissed and stalked along side my mutts...most of the time I hunted alone so when I stepped out from the house I swapped modes and became a predator along with the dogs...the few times I had someone with me I had to act normal...lol
The dogs hunted better when I was alone by how I led them...yes we all gain experience as we age...but never under estimate a youngster. ..

Im just one of those old fools who realizes the older I get, the less I know. Not everybody processes their hunting experience on the same leve, so you are right about age. Just want to thank you for your service to our country.

Agree with you there kai. There's probably a million guys who own dogs that have caught 1,000 more pigs than me. But, a lot of the guys I hunt with can tell you I pay a lot of attention when hunting. Where we are, where dogs are, how fast, who's going where with who? Any and every little detail I make mental notes. Since I started doing that I've become a lot more successful even when I didn't have great dogs around(hell I definitely don't have anything good around now) . But end of the day someone who has had dogs for 10 years and hunts 2 x a month. I promise In under 3 years I've hunted more than someone like that. years = experience. I'll give them that. But if you don't pay attention and take the information in front of you for what it's worth. That experience equates to 0 knowledge gained. You

well experience is what it is experience ... and there's no replacing it ......doesn't mean a person is right all the  time  but  I would say its a good educated guess .........far as the size of the hogs ...a rank bad hog can come in any size .....problem with a big 400 pound hog a sure nuff rank one can kill your dog dead in a matter of seconds ....not by cut but by just flat out crushing the dog ....they can grab your dog in the rib caged and just mash him into a bank or tree beat him on the ground like a sack and put feet on the dog and rip his rib cage  out .....you ever get on a sure nuff rank 350 pound hog in the right place  you may pack collars  home ......150 pound hog on the average probably cut more dogs but a sure nuff big rank hog in a bad place can get bad bad .....that's what experience has taught me ........

All of this depends on the mind set of the individual. Every one is deferent so the speed of the performance of each person will be different. But as far as dog hunting the better the dogs u start with might speed up your knowledge. The harder your hunts are might speed up your knowledge. Starting from scratch or having a good mentor will cut a lot of things out. You never know to much listen.

I listen to experience... people that's been doing it all or most of their lives.

Age doesn't mean anything... I've met several from all age groups that's been doing it a few years and can teach you anything you need to know haha.

I put this topic into the same classification as the "finished" dog theory, a dog is finished when he's dead in my opinion, now I'll throw the term around every once in a while, same goes for us as
Handlers, were never finished until we're either dead or outa the game...
