I agree with Mike and THDogs...a truly super once in a lifetime dog won't produce the same...because he is just that...but if he is of a great line of dogs then most often they should produce those type of dogs when bred to the right females...

Let's say the great dog dies in a freak accident...but he has a brother that has a few faults and does not fit as to what you like so you gave him to a buddy...in this case you are breeding to the bloodline and not the dog...I would do this in a heartbeat before even thinking of  breeding  out of the line...but I would do my best to breed to the best dogs in the program and it should be that way...

My dad used to breed German shepherds and he always says if one male or female isn't breeding he had pretty good luck treating them for erlichia. It's a tick born disease that a lot of times won't test out. Might try a nice stout dose of doxycycline

You'd want to finish a whole round though. Not just a pill here and there.

UPDATE:

I bred the brother to my gyp and she took this time!  She should have puppies in a week or two. Looks like she gonna have a good size litter cause she is huge already. I appreciate all the help and will post pics once they're born.

Glad to hear you'll have some of that bloodline on your yard.  I'd love to have a sure nuff cracker, if they're as rough as the floridas boys say they are, over here in my yard.  Just saying haha

You might actually come out better using the other male, in my case just about all my dogs go back to a certain cross that was made 13 years ago, the only male alive outa that litter is mine and when I got my hands on him he had never been hog hunted, only used to pen cows, I hunted him once or twice and saw enough I liked and bred him and have been more than satisfied, he had a full brother to him that was a wayyyy better hog dog than him but had been hunted most of his life, he never produced anything that I was impressed with, I've got pups off of two of his full brothers that are way better than anything he produced and grandpups off his littermate sister and some off his half brother that are all nice dogs, the old dog ranger was the best hog dog out of the bunch hands down but wasn't the best in the brood pen at all...

The brother I bred to has a smaller head but more drive, bottom, and better nose. He didn't turn on until 2.5 years old which is slow for this breed. The male that I couldn't breed to has a block head and is more catchy but his brother is a better hunter. The female comes off parents with bigger heads so hopefully they will off set each other. Bottom line they have both produces a lot of hogs and are pure heart. I like a dog that will find and catch the hog and hold it until I get there, this fits my style of hunting. I will be nice to finally produce my own pups and get pick of the litter and give the rest to my hunting buddies to see how the whole litter turns out. It's taken me 5 years to get the line, make the dogs, and have pups. I should be any day now.
