September 6. After 3 weeks of fighting to get healthy after one of the worst wrecks I've ever seen a dog take, my yella gyp Kate just didn't have no fight left in her. I found she had passed sometime in the late morning hours, putting her in the ground made me sick, and I contemplated just culling the last pup I had and hanging it up. Kate was as good as it got in my eyes, she was the difference in a lot of hunts, the sole reason me and buddies didn't leave empty handed a lot of times. As a dog she showed me what heart and sure enough GRIT, really looked like. All hog dog, All the time. And With her gone I was left with nothing... almost.

Sketch, a little goofy, immature, and very green 14 month old catahoula pup I've raised is all I got now. She has proven to have all the potential, all the traits it takes to make a good hog dog, she's shown in some form or fashion. Though there's no way I would even try to say she is ready to take over the show. I woke up a little late this morning, 8:30 or so. Checked the weather and it was still a cool 63*. What the heck am I doing at home, this pup aint gonna become a hog dog sitting in that kennel and I don't have anything better to do. So I threw sketch in the box and off we went. For first time In a long time, I rolled up to the spot to the sight of fresh rooting. Kicked sketch out and after a little conversation about her hanging around upsetting me, she took out and went hunting, never very far but busy none the less. Soon we were up behind a watering hole and she got real excited. Burned out to 120 yards and started just running around in circles. I've seen her do this once before but I wasn't thinking I was gonna be that lucky this morning. Sketch had struck hogs one time leading up to this morning and when she did, she didn't bark, just hung out over by the hogs until ole Kate got there and helped her out. Well sketch come back from being out and I kept on, pushing her back towards where she had been hanging out. Well we get about 50 yards south of there and she burns back off to the same spot. This time the hogs took exception and went to getting vocal and it was at that time, I realized this little goofy pup done found hogs, on her second hunt ever by herself. So crawling I went into this thicket. Managed to shoot a small boar and sow out of the first rally. Then about 10 minutes later I shot another small sow sketch was running as she come across a trail. Little ole Sketch has a long way to go. Needs to find her voice and a lot of confidence and hogs under her belt, but she proved this morning all the time I put into her so far wasn't for nothing.

It's tough losing a good dog but it's part of the game it's going to happen. Just always keep some young dogs coming. Sorry for your lose but sounds like your back on your way to making another

Training dogs is not about quantity, it's more about timing, the right situations, and proper guidance...After that it's up to the dog...

Thanks guys. It's never easy, hell if it was I reckon everyone would own a string of dogs. Ed I saw you recently lost one. Sorry to hear that bud. This summer has been the last for a lot of good dogs it seems. I'm gonna put the time in behind this pup and hope she makes, it's about all I can do. Ole kate will be the standard around here for a good long while
