Which ever one does it best, I've seen a wide spectrum of different dogs used for this, from weannie dogs to dogs picked up at the dump to high dollar blood hounds and labs, it's not necessary breed specific but rather individual dogs, good buddy of mine has a grade yellow lab that is probably the best one I've ever seen and has several hundred deer under his belt but all of his litter mates won't have anything to do with it, do a google search of people breeding dogs specifically for that and start there....

Training dogs is not about quantity, it's more about timing, the right situations, and proper guidance...After that it's up to the dog... A hunting dog is born not made...

We used labs in the past. They were good but would not bay or catch a wounded deer. We have some old school stock curs that are used to work cattle and hog hunt. These dogs have good minds and listen. We started using them and they seem to be total package. My dad got a cur that supposedly came from the line of a legendary deer fracker in south tx. She's a really good blood dog. We crossed her with my male and the pups are doing good now

A dog with a good nose will trail. My house dog which is a feist will trail anything but it’s frowned upon where I live so don’t use him. He loves it.

X2 with a dog with a good nose...a hunting that don’t mind an older track like a dog bred for trailing and treeing...a stock dog is a fifty fifty chance...
