I have a dog that lost enough blood last Friday that I was beginning to think he wasn't going to make it. He was in a vegetative state of shock for several minutes before I was able to get some fluids in him and get him back alert. The cut wasn't deep or bad, just in the right spot. He has ate very good since Friday, lots of deer trimmings and good dog food. He looks and acts like his normal self. Heck he wanted to go hunting the morning after. My question is this, HOW LONG SHOULD A DOG THAT HAS LOST A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF BLOOD BE LAID UP BEFORE HUNTING AGAIN? I appreciate any replies!

I'd let the dog tell me, when he's on the end of his chain, barking, jumping, and wanting to go, give him another day or two and load his butt up!

X2... usually a couple weeks from what I've experienced.

I got a male dog cut down pretty good and he went in shock. He just finished a 10 day cycle of antibiotics. They helped him and he's already on the chain jumping up and down. I'll probably rest him a few more days, but I think he'd perform if I took him to the woods right now.

Mailman, was it muscle or just a larger artery cut. If it was the above I do a minimum 2 weeks. It takes ten days or so for skin to heal enough to not bust open. Muscle and arteries take longer. Think about how long it would take for it to heal on yourself and that is about how long it will take your dog. Mike

If it is an artery then I would make sure it heals enough that it won’t burst open when the dog is hunted...otherwise if it burst it will bleed as bad as the original cut... it also makes sense that the dog will not have the energy it had before the loss of blood...I don’t know how long it will take the blood to get back to it’s normal composition...it has to do with how much blood was lost and a certain amount of time is neede for the blood profile to regenerate ...the blood cells carry oxygen and nutrients throughout the body so you need to take that into consideration...

I appreciate the advice fellas. I had talked to a vet buddy of mine and he said 3 weeks before his blood count would be back to normal. But he doesn’t deal hog dogs very much.  It’s seasonably warm and I’m not gonna chance it. I was  hoping to get him in the woods one more time before turkey season. He is my best dog and can absolutely show out in hogs. My dogs have had 100s of cuts worse than this, but this one hit the ol main vein on the inside of his leg towards the chest. Just Glad he’s still with me!

You can help his blood count build back up quicker if you give him some red cell and a k9 vitamin daily...
