On the quest to be a dog man.

Had a frustrating time this past Friday night. It was my first time hunting without one of my more experienced buddies. My buddy let me take his long range cold nose dog, little daddy didn't marry mommy, his RCD Fat So Fat, and another little RCD named bear. I had my Smokey dog, Dum Dum, Scooter, and a 12 month old pit that still hasn’t been on a pig. Me and my cousin went together, and he’s never dog hunted so I was really wanting to get him on a pig. Farmer said he’s been seeing them around 7:30pm so we got there at 7:30pm on the dot.
Got the dogs unloaded and started walking down to the corn. Soon as we hit the front of the field (maybe 3 minutes of walking), the dogs went to our right about 50yds in to the corn, just running around stretching their legs. Well 7 pigs crossed a fire break to our left, about 75yds from us. I hollered and the dogs ran down to us and little daddy didn't marry mommy started running the track, opening up and all the dogs followed her. Well after a few minutes we realized that the collars weren’t working right and all the dogs had split up. I was using my alpha with 2 collars, and my buddies 320 with 4 collars. I had the alpha tracking Smokey and little daddy didn't marry mommy since they go further than everything else and they’re tone trained.
Well I’m stressing at this point because Smokey will hit a mile quick and little daddy didn't marry mommy will run one all day wherever it takes her. Luckily i had beep beeps on them as a back up. But I didn’t wanna go back to the truck to get the box just yet. Well we finally figure out the 320 is actually picking up little daddy didn't marry mommy as bear, and Smokey as scooter. And bear and scooter don’t have a track at all. I guess the frequencies must’ve interfered. We finally get them rounded up after 3 hours and decided to leave little daddy didn't marry mommy and scooter in the box since two collars weren’t working and the farmer wanted us gone by 2am since it was gonna be opening morning of deer season. At this point it was just after 10pm and I knew little daddy didn't marry mommy could easily make us be there later than 2am.
Well after all that we start back from scratch and start walking the perimeter of the corn. The dogs went off a few times but came back after a short while. Then my Smokey dog starts cutting in and out of the edge of the corn. All of a sudden it sounds like a freight train is coming for us. We jump out the way and two pigs bust out the corn in to the woods. First pig was probably about 400lbs and second was probably 150-180ish. Smokey came out right behind them looking kind of confused, moving slow. All the other dogs were in the woods, not 30ft from where the pigs ran. I didn’t hear a single bark. Smokey is open on a hot track and he never made a peep. None of the rough dogs tried to catch them. The dogs went after them for 45yds then just came back.
I’m still confused about the whole thing. Almost all of the dogs have been on a pig that big at some point or another so I know they shouldn’t have been scared about its size. Most of them are somewhat young (2-3 years) but they’ve been on a lot of pigs and a lot of hunts. Smokey and dum dum were both hunted 3-4 times a week doing 12+ hour hunts for over a year.
Now when they went after that first group at the beginning of the hunt they all got pretty hot and I had to let them lay down in mud for about 30 minutes because they could barely breathe. The only thing I can come up with is that they were too hot/tired and just didn’t have the energy to run them? Any thoughts? By no means are they superstars but they’re pretty decent dogs usually. It really shocked me that they let those pigs get away that easy. I wasn’t too happy about it, especially after I had been telling my cousin we would for sure get some pigs in that field

It very well could have been the heat. I push mine all the time into the heat of the day... when they run out of gas, they’re done. I don’t fault a dog in this heat.

That’s the only thing I could think of. Just wanted some outside opinions. I wasn’t so much mad as I was confused. Those dogs have been on a lot of pigs and I just couldn’t understand why they let them go right by. They were definitely tired after that first run though. All the dogs started hanging closer and were moving slower. When I let the dogs stop in the mud for a while they sunk down until only they’re heads were exposed and they just laid there. I was actually pretty worried about one having a heat stroke with the way they were breathing and they didn’t want to drink any water. I didn’t think it would be too big of a deal since it was gonna be dark soon but I guess I should’ve waited later to let them run after it had cooled off some

The heats a silent killer man,,, Just lost my 7 yr old parker male last weekend to a stroke,,, and they had water where we were...  And others can tell you ,,, I have seen scent not hold up at all for dogs to trail like you know your dogs can.  Dogs that can run a track all day sometimes cant get it lined out in this heat and humidity...

There was a lot of water near us, but I think I should’ve waited till it had cooled off a little more. I know better now. And thanks, I didn’t know that about the heat and humidity messing with a dogs nose

If I'm not mistaken, you can't run a 320 and alfa together in the same rig . At least I can't my buddies alfa screws with my DC 50 and 40 bad

^^^^ Im pretty sure that is correct. every single time I hunt with someone running a 320 in close proximity to my alpha they have issues.

I’ve actually hunted a lot with another 320 with my alpha. Almost every time I go actually. Only one  other time did I have the same issue and my buddy just had to change the collar ID for one of my collars. Couldn’t figure it out from the alpha so he managed to do it from his 320. And when I was in Afghanistan he used both my alpha and his 320 together for every hunt (5 times a week) so he could use the shock feature of my alpha.

Bignasty, I don’t have time to read the link just now, but I will read it tomorrow.

Thanks for that link bignasty, it seems very helpful! The chart didn’t look right for me, maybe because I’m on a mobile device... but now I know where to start to experiment with changing the numbers until I find some that work
