Does anyone do this? Sometimes I’ll cut the ears off of a hog and freeze them for a few days, then let the dogs eat them for a snack. They’ll usually snap them up in one bite. I’m thinking about taking the skin from the next pig I kill and using it to make rawhide treats for the dogs to chew on. On top of giving them a chew toy, I feel like smelling pig all the time will keep the younger dogs picking up pig scent and immediately wanting to take the track. Any thoughts on this?

I’ll second what JDT, all that sounds good theoretically but I think it makes much of a difference, if it’s bred into them they will do it no matter how much they’ve smelled a certain smell, now doing what your talking about doing will benefit them in the boredom dept, most issues away from health the root cause is a dogs bored, especially working dogs, they need something to occupy their mind when not hunting, I’m always giving all my dogs bones or pieces of hide to chew on to give them something to focus their attention on, other than sitting in a pen or a chain all day, I just about always have pups of some sort and various ages running around and I give them all the bones and heads of the deer and hogs we kill, I’ve never seen anything that will put weight on pups like a hog head will...

Thanks for the replies. I’ll probably still do it just for snacks then. I leave kong balls in the kennels to give them something to focus on. They’ll love chewing on the hides I think. Once all the friends and family have some pig meat in the freezer I’m also going to start grinding up pig meat, fat, and organs, to make a raw diet to feed them. I’ll do a little more research first to see if there’s anything else I should put in it to ensure that they are getting all of the nutrients they need. But I believe it will be better than dog food and will save me a bunch of money

Sometimes I will boil a partial hog hide and then freeze it in pieces...just yesterday I took out a piece and thawed it out, cut a small hole in it and snapped a leash to it and dragged it in front of my 7 week old pups and two of the three immediately gave chase and sat back like good roping horses and didn't let go...it took the third pup a little longer to react than I thought she should...normally at 4 or 5 weeks I have pups skip a meal and feed them a raw hog head...just putting pig in their minds...and keeping it positive for them is just as important...
Positive meaning to not feed it to them when they have just eaten because they will lose interest quickly...feeding it to them when hungry makes them eager to want hog...

Reuben, I also did drags with ears when my Smokey and Scooter dog were pups. I’ve seen you talk about feeding a hog head before and plan on doing it when I have a litter. Do you do it with the mom also, or wait until they’re separated?

I keep the mom separate during any training of pups...

I’ve done this a few times with my pups. I try not to feed my hog dogs any deer scraps with hide on it though. Kind of goes against what I’m going for anyways if that makes sense. I don’t want them enjoying chewing on a deer. They love the hog ears especially my pit pup.
