The blue tick I have can pick up and old sign and run with it. He can wind from the box and mostly hunts with his nose in the air but have seen him nose to the ground. Really depends on how old the scent is. Seen him bite a hog to stop it and seen him bay up a 300lb hog with no fear. If he wasn't open I would not sell him
