Been addicted to chasing hogs ever since my cousin took me when I was 16. Went a handful of times and finally moved to the country a few months ago  and got my own set of knuckleheads. These are some of the hunts.Second hunt by ourselves got on hogs again. The first time I found out they run like hell so I had brought my dog possum a pitmix Chief my cd willow and a catpit. Not ten minutes after I walked them in chief and possum jumped a heard of deer and were off. 800 yards later question mark on the Garmin comes up. And I walk back to the truck and tried to drive around to get closer to see where they were and no luck. So I grab the cd and catpit and start walking in. We finally get close enough to where I can hear squealing and the catpit runs in. I get in and seal the deal. Thankfully he wasn’t that big because I was by myself

We kept hammering on it and catching smaller ones then one day we got on a pretty mean boar I would get 50 yards from him to let the cd go and he’d take off. Several times he ran 500 yards then would bay up and I’d get close. Well the last time he finally hit a 800 yards stretch and bayed up against the lake. I finally caught up on top of a hill above them and let the cd go. I was right behind her the whole way and the hog saw her coming and was giving her some good licks until she finally caught. Pretty sure we gave a bass fisherman a good show. Then on the walk back I had all the dogs on a leash but my cd willow and and we jumped some pigs she took off after them and I started letting dogs off. Pretty good sow. I think the only reason she was the one caught is because she ran in between two trees and got stuck lol

I remember my beginning. Stay after it and hunt with everybody you can as long as they are ethical. You will learn something from everyone  and you'll never get too old or experienced to learn more.

A guy gave me that’s family down the line gave me his help dog that would run with his lead dog step for step. First time I took him out we hit a few spots that didn’t have no sign our last stop I saw he was staying in place on the garmin for a couple of minutes we finally heard him open up. Big ole solid sow with all her piglets

I’ve met a lot of great people during all of this and a few bad. It’s crazy how much people have helped me along the way. I would post more pics and stories but this photobucket thing on my phone is slow.

Few pieces of advice from a younger guy that got into this deal without any help or prior knowledge. 1. Don’t go getting 32 dogs. You’ll only be shorting the 2 or 3 that are potentially worth having anyway. Get you 2 or 3 young dogs you like and just take them SOBs to the woods every chance you can. Don’t make a piss if it ain’t been a hog hunt through the area In 6 months. The dry runs where you don’t even get around a track is where you make dogs and see what you’re feeding. 2. Along the way if you stick with it you will meet a lot of guys that will try to talk over your head, talk a line of bullnumber 2 2 miles long trying to convince you they know more and have better and over complicate stuff. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck. It’s a duck.   3. Getting a dog to hunt a hog is pretty simple, they either got it or they don’t, you’ll slowly learn to recognize certain things from a a dogs actions and in turn will learn how and where to guide them to give them the best opportunity to do something. After that it’s on them.

Yes sir I understand that completely. I’ve only bought two dogs that I think are going to make good dogs. It’s funny that my best ones are the yard dogs I’ve had that were free. And yes I’ve ran into those guys before and I try to piece together the useful information from the no good. I’ve learned a lot from this site, but the best thing I’ve done is actually go by myself with my dogs and just do the deal.

Yep, staying in the woods will definitely teach you a lot. Keep at it, sounds and looks like you are on the right path.
