Went out for a hunt last night. Got invited out to hunt a private club, we met up at 7pm and the club cooked us some awesome pork chops and collard greens. We turned out right after 11pm, started pushing past the corn down towards the congaree river. There have been a lot of pigs coming in that area but the dogs weren’t hitting on anything. We get down towards the river and they start trying to go to a neighboring property, we’ve had permission to hunt there before, but it’s a gated spot that we can’t just go in whenever we want, so we pulled the dogs back. We push back up the other side of the corn and everything starts taking an interest in something about 200yds away. A few young dogs yipped and then they all took off, Timmy’s Lil daddy didn't marry mommy dog ran over to honor them and she starts bawling and takes off. They end up running a big loop and taking the pig back to where they were trying to go on that other property earlier. They cross the creek and are covering ground quick. We lose them at .98, this is just before 4am. My dogs Thorn, Dum Dum, Scooter, and my puppy Punk all quit it and come back. Still don’t have a track on Lil daddy didn't marry mommy or Timmy’s RCD Fat So Fat. Me, Timmy, and another young guy that was tagging along start trying to get to them. It took us 3 hours of wading through some alligator infested, waist deep water, and a lot of walking. I think it was about 3.5-4 miles that we covered. When we got close enough to pick them back up they were both showing treed. We finally get close and we can hear lil daddy didn't marry mommy steady chopping, over 20 barks a minute. Fat So Fat is showing treed 140yds from where she is, we knew that couldn’t be good. I was moving slow from having a 3” ringshank nail go through my foot a few days ago, so I told them to leave me behind and I would catch up. Well they get in there and I start hearing them popping off shots. I holler for them to not shoot anymore so I could come in the corn. I get in there and it’s the biggest pig I’ve been on. We guessed between 360lbs and 400lbs. My little female, Mine, had went in and tried to hang him and Timmy said she got sent cart wheeling 10ft in the air. She hit the ground and tried him and again and same thing happened. Then she hesitated, I guess it kinda shook her up, he charged at Timmy and so he shot him in the head a few times to drop him. He was getting upset about Fat So Fat and asked if I could go find him while he tried to calm himself down. I go find him, and carry him out the corn. He was cut up bad, throat tore open, shoulder laid open, and a few other cuts all over him. He was looking at me and moving his eyes but that was it. He was in shock and not moving his body at all. I was hoping we could save him, but he lost too much blood. Pretty bad feeling, I watched the life leave his eyes while I was talking to him. First time I’ve had a dog get killed by a pig like that. I know it’s hog hunting but it still sucks. During deer season Timmy doesn’t run pigs so I used to pick up that dog and take him with me every hunt. He wasn’t the brightest of the bunch but he would catch with everything he had. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I agree, would’ve been a lot worse if we didn’t get the hog.

Training dogs is not about quantity, it's more about timing, the right situations, and proper guidance...After that it's up to the dog... A hunting dog is born not made...

We run pretty much all dogs that are straight catch, normally we get to them a lot quicker. That’s the longest it’s ever taken me to get to one. I hate to say it but I’m glad the other dogs quit it, if they would’ve got to him I would probably be burying a few more dogs. I knew we had the gate code for that property so I suggested us driving in, but the guy with me said even though he has that code we have to get prior permission to hunt it so he didn’t want to take a truck in. Can’t argue with that, but getting there in 15 minutes instead of 3 hours might’ve made a difference, never know. He also could’ve had the dog cut down in the first 15 seconds, there’s just no telling. He only had teeth on that one side. When he slung my female he must’ve caught her on the side with no teeth since she had no cuts. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Your right about not knowing about differences it might have made if you had got there sooner. My bet is the only way you might have made a difference is if you had been standing right there when they initially stopped him. I caught a boar a couple weeks ago that I'm almost 100% sure killed one of my young dogs. We cast dogs that morning and watched them wind the hogs and head into the south wind. When turned and looked, the hogs were out in the field about 30 yards outside the wood line at 400 yards. The dogs popped out of the woods and the hogs saw them at 50 yards away. They immediately scattered but all towards the woods. There was a bay for about 30 seconds and then it was silent. Garmin said all the dogs but one were leaving in a hurry. I told the guys that he was caught or dead because he had no back up. He would bay big hogs but tight and if a hog rushed him or tried to break he was going to mount it. By the time we ran that 400 yards, he was laying in a wet season ditch taking his last breath. The dogs weren't on the ground 4 or 5 minutes tops when that happened. We couldn't have saved him if we had been standing there when he got hit. It's a sick feeling that seems to hang around when you lose one you respect and worse when you are more than attached. I know my dogs and their attitudes. I know that young dog would be thinking "oh hell no, now all your family has gotta die too", lol. He got rougher each time he got cut. The next hog always had to pay the price seemed like. I love the heart, but vengeance got the best of him.
