The meaning of “a double-edged sword”

a situation or course of action having both positive and negative effects.

When I was a kid in the 1960’s we didn’t have a phone...no AC...no water heater but we did have an outhouse...we did get to enjoy country living and having and maintaining about 20 head of cattle...my dad kept them for cash flow...when crops didn’t do well sometimes he would borrow money and use them as collateral...we also had chickens and hogs...any other meat was off the land...times were hard back then but I was glad I experienced it...AC and indoor plumbing would have been icing on the cake...

Of course there were the well to do back then but most of those folks lived in town and probably never experienced
The finer things in life like stepping out the door and calling the dogs and away we would go hunting in any direction I wanted to hunt that day...

Technology...the double edged sword...

Technology has been good in many many ways...a gallon of milk doesn’t go sour in three days anymore...bread doesn’t get moldy in three days etc...now I have central heat and air...a freezer and two refrigerators etc...etc...but...
I want to discuss technologies in general of today...

It took 200,000 years for the human populations to reach 1 billion world wide...in my minds eye the big reasons for this was food supplies...it was about living off the land just like “Mother Nature Intended” for all living creatures to do...and there was illness and other things that kept our numbers at 1 billion...so for me 1 billion is probably the right number of human population but with common sense we could comfortably maintain 3 billion with our modern technologies...

200,000 years to reach 1 billion with sticks and stones as our best technology is a good data point in my mind as to what Mother Nature delegated to us as our rightful place on earth...

But in the last 200 years we have had a human population growth from 1 billion to almost 8 billion...that is exponential growth at it worst if you ask me...so what happened 200 years ago that started with the steep incline in human population growth-yep...it is technology...we went from using oxen and mules pulling one plow and maybe plowing 1/2 acre of land in one day to plowing maybe 1000 acres per day on an air conditioned tractor pulling 16 plows at 5 mph with GPS programming and a super nice stereo system...used to get 1/2 a bale of cotton per acre but with the genetically modified cotton we can now get 4 or 5 bales by the looks of it...same with corn and other foods...

IMO...with our modern technologies in all areas...let me rephrase that...with most technologies, they have been a big improvement in our lives...

Some of the negatives as I see them...

Just from what I have learned about how Mother Nature works...using the coyote and rabbits as an example...as the rabbit population starts to peak to it’s highest level the coyote population is starting to bottom out and rise...at some point there will be a good balance of both and then as the rabbit population declines the coyote will starve and illness will set in...and the female coyote will skip heat periods so no baby coyotes and their population declines...so the rabbit population goes back up and then the coyote recovers...checks and balances...it is a beautiful system...yet harsh...

Mother Nature is on top of her game...she is taking care of business every minute of the day...God is awesome...

Greed...a part of human nature
Technology has allowed us to live comfortably...because of it we multiply and builders know the best way to make the best profits is to buy river bottom land or out in the natural and virgin woods so they go out and buy the 5000 acre ranch and map it out and divide it and bull doze the hardwoods down in a way where it looks pleasing to the buyer by leaving a few majestic oaks in strategic locations...and then build many homes and concrete roads and streets...and this is called progress...jobs are created...the population grows...there will be more tax revenue...more Walmart’s and other stores...more roads and factories...just more of everything...we call it creating a better economy and the stock market is booming because of it...

To many of us this is all in the name of progress...
But when we look into it and see the real truth we are raping the land...no regard for wildlife...we don’t even think about their food and water supplies nor their shelter...

Driving down the road we see all kinds of dead animals and many of us don’t even give it a second thought...because all we think about is growth regardless of consequences...

It says It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of The Living GOD.   We as humans have our cycles too.     We have wars, genocides, and socialism and it's close relatives.  I guess genocide actually follows socialism and it's kin.    Satan and our sin nature are the root cause of this.    More damming than falling victim to wars and genocide which can only take your life is falling into the hands of The Living GOD.     When the human race becomes to physically corrupted and or to morally and spiritually perverted and wicked, HE has a cleansing of biblical proportions.       Every 2000 years give or take a few years since the creation of man, a prophecy pertaining to/for that particular time has been fulfilled that affected the entire world.         Guess where we are at on that timeline and the prophecy pertaining to it.        It is my belief that one should draw near to HIM as line upon line and precept upon precept.     Why so close?     Just think of it this way.    If we are as well off in HIS sight as we think we are, then why is Yeshua appointed to come back at this time.     The 7 seals, 7 trumpets, and 7 vials or bowls and the 4 horseman aren't coming upon us because of how good and great we are before the eyes of The Living GOD, really quite the contrary but we are too foolish to see and have been decieved.   Most of us now days did not grow up in the truth and as a result we do not know the truth.    We think we are in good standing but if you really knew the truth and the depth of the deception we are under, shocking does little to describe it.

There are no words to describe the amount of deception humanity has lived under, it does little to no good to try and explain it to folks who aren’t searching for a deeper truth than the belief systems in which we have been raised in and thus conditioned to believe is the only way, I’ll stop right here as not to offend anyone’s beliefs, we are all entitled to live our lives the way we choose, those who want to know the truth will search for it, and the answers will always come when the time is right for us to understand, technology is the taxation on mankind, our lives are so dependent on it that those who control the technology control every aspect of our lives and yet maybe 1% of the entire planetary population has the open mindedness to realize this...

One thing that I love about hog hunting is some of the conversations that take place during the hunt.......

With true dog men, there is a carefulness and depth in which they approach dog hunting. Deep thinking and paying attention to detail are the top traits that all of them have in common. And I find those traits also manifest themselves in all areas of their lives such as this topic. I've been hunting with a man in his 70's, who has taught me alot about hunting with dogs, but even more about the way life was and the way it is now....

Thanks for the topic Reuben and the replies Black Streak & Goose. It guys like y'all that turn a "hunt" into a "good hunt" by conversation alone...Who knows maybe we can make a hunt one day and really beat up this topic...lol

once upon a time in my younger years I developed my first theory of what the world’s greatest danger to mankind and of all living creatures and things including trees and all vegetation in general…my thoughts were because of technology the human population was exploding and over population was going to be our downfall and I thought it was the root cause…then one day I realized it was a symptom and not the root cause…so then I thought some more and thought that the root cause was our greed…because greed would push us foreword to the point of no return…and then the truth came to me and I realized that greed was a symptom as well but closer to the truth…then the truth came to me…the root cause is our nature…our human nature…
the truth…
technology is allowing us to multiply exponentially...Technology has allowed us to deviate from the balance that Mother Nature designated to us as our human population allowance on earth... The further we deviate from the design the harder the fall will be when it happens...if we don’t change it is not if but when...

I know there’s a possibility that several people will read what I’m about to write and decide I must be some “Whiney millennial liberal”, but be assured, I’m not.

Climate Change.

In my opinion, climate change is very real, we are playing an active role in it and........it’s not necessarily a bad thing. I think Rueben is right about Mother Nature and to me, right now, climate change is Mother Nature’s reset button.

There is just far too many people on this planet

Some really good comments on this thread. I agree that we will be our own downfall. We are populating at an unsustainable rate. Things like the Black Plague are mother nature’s way of keeping us in check and it won’t be long (relative term) before something happens that acts as a “reset” button for us.
