We are seeing an increase in thermal/night vision hog hunters with AR set ups in our area (NW of DFW Metroplex)
-
I was having trouble finding hogs or hog sign on one of my places that’s normally productive. Didn’t think much of it. I started hunting it deeper and harder and started tripping over hog, coyote, Coon, skunk, and possum carcasses. I talked to the landowner and found out he was letting some young local boys hunt in there at night with night scopes & AR’s.
-
Between thermal & boar buster traps, they can put a dent in a hog population.
-
Any of you fellow doggers being affected by this?

Most definitely. Problem we having in the Tri-States of FL-AL-GA is those hunters are convincing the land owner to not let us dog hunters in there to hunt because all we do is "scatter" the hogs.  We tell all of our land owners that you need to be shooting,  trapping and killing them with dogs if you want to get ahead otherwise you will fall behind.   We hunt farm land so the farmers want them all dead.

That’s why there is no hogs around me anymore. There are two night vision outfits 5 miles from my house. And the heli hunter is 20 min cross town and then every rich guy from Dallas that owns 200 acres and pops every living creature that comes thru there.

It popped up pretty hard around me about 2 years ago. Fayette, Colorado, lavaca county. Moment I caught wind of night vision guys getting access to stuff I had been hunting for a few years. I told the landowners I wouldn't be back. I walked away from a couple thousand acres. Now I have 4 or 5 places I hunt there and that's it. And they're places I just hunt because the I know the landowners and they let me. Not because I'm supposed to rid them of their "hog problem". Every now and again I drive by an old place and get a good laugh when it's rooted to all hell. Hell one place had a bull get shot on it, another had a brand new easement road destroyed after 4 inches of rain. Piss on it, hope they root up their wife's flower bed..... As for the traps there's currently a boar buster trap set up about 400 yards from my dog pens on the neighbors to the east. There's a big set of very large and dumb hogs that don't get jacked with that live in the hill on the west neighbors place. They cross me and go root at night. Been a month, and these hogs that don't get messed with, have rooted all around that trap several times. Still ain't gone in it.  Maybe it's the 22 year old kid I'm me but I get a kick out of it. I bayed the whole group of hogs on accident on memorial day this year. Killed 3 and wasn't even hunting. Turned dogs out while I mowed and they ended up bayed in that hill.
These days I hunt our ranches and a few big neighbor places and the couple places back in schulenburg. That's it. Plenty hogs to keep me busy when I want to be

Night vision hunters should not shoot anything but hogs and nothing more...

I have seen dead hogs in the open and in rice fields...over time I believe the hogs will learn to not flush with helicopters hovering overhead or when they hear the night vision hunters idling along the hogs will disappear...

On the other hand I like a few hogs in a large section of woods just to see the dogs find a hog and bay or catch a hog...when going behind someone else’s dogs and they say no hogs in the area and then we go behind those dogs and within 15 minutes we have one going...well that is exciting to me... I think we all strive to breed the type of dog that makes it look easy...

It definitely is going on around here too. I haven't noticed a real impact but I know some of the guys doing it and they do have pretty good luck. I do think the hogs are gonna evolve or adapt to the night vision and heli hunters as well. They are smart, they learned to flee from pressure and I think they will learn what types of pressure to ride out and which types to flee. JMO! As for those hunters screwing up hunting spots, it's going to happen, guaranteed! People are disrespectful, selfish, inconsiderate, cut throat, a$$holes anymore! I don't have a problem calling a land owner ANYTIME  that I see where someone else has tore up or destroyed property or injured livestock. They don't care so it doesn't bother me to make sure that their sorry butt isn't creating problems for me or my land owners. Call it snitching or whatever. The way I see it, they are flipping me and the property owner the finger so I'll just break it off. They can come confront me if they don't like it. My bet is they won't! I also go.out of my way for my land owners. I have fixed fences, penned neighboring cattle, got trees off the fences, put out hay, checked salt water tanks at oil wells, helped pull calves, etc. for my land owners. Last week one of them told me that he got into it with another neighbor a couple places over because that neighbor said he was going to call someone to come run the hogs. He told him 2 people had permission to hunt hogs on his place and that's all that was gonna be on there. If he needed hogs ran to call one of us. The 2nd guy doesn't even hunt anymore so that leaves me. I called in a some people (a theft ring) that I saw at his barn once. All his loyalty cost me was a phone call.

well the good ol thermal talk.....
south east GA- night vision is thang of the past its mostly all thermal
at first I  fought tooth and nail and carry on about it but Its been going on for long time but has been real real big for last several years - thinking they gone ruin my hunting spot- no doubt they can put a hurt on them but they cant get em all- what helps us is smaller fields- but I can see where out west it would hurt more than here
branches and heads all the way around fields here- 97% of the shooters cant shoot a running hog so most of time only one or two hogs get shot before they in the woods and cant be seen-

what I have seen is it don't last- shooting hogs is pretty dumb and pretty boring if you ask me but I may be also alittle partial to running dogs and also I have never shot a hog unless it was with my pistol in the ear hole to clean one after we tied it- so I may be wrong about all of this but whatever- it normally goes whooohooooo I shot a hog last night - whohhoo I shot a hog last night to whoho I shot a hog last night - it don't last it gets old to them shooters- unlike dog hunting every hunt is different

got a very good friend of mine- he hunted with me some and then he got into this shooting hogs and hasn't been back with me-id call him major league big time scared of the dark shooter have to have a thermal)real men catch hogs girls shoot hogs  Grin Grin and he say I was major league big time hog dogger with them black butt currs  Grin Grin
so there got to be alil silent competition ( like most everything else)- he would go out three or 4 nights a week and shoot a few hogs this lasted bout a year and aint been back- but I run dogs one or two days a week always have but never more than that over the last 9 or 10 years\
his shooting numbers to my catching numbers were pretty close but im sure he shot more than I caught on some occasions- but quality of hogs! there is no comparison! - he started off with a decent few hogs and it got to just little small crap them big hogs learned that trick and trust me he wernt shooting big hogs cause they wernt big hogs there- this place he was shooting has big hogs- always has- so I would tell him, hey bud shoot the small ones - a big dead hog is useless to you- leave the big ones for me lol

3 years ago I hunted a farm and have hunted this farm long time and caught a bunch and I mean a bunch of hogs there - so farmer got a guy to come shoot hogs and I told him I wont be back unless that shooter cant come back- I am now hunting the farm again lol I took a hog by his house that we caught and tied with a small hole through the bottom of his neck - hey bud here is your big time shooters hog lol

so what I am saying is the thermal does some damage but I cant tell a huge difference around here- some places it impacts more than others depending on the pressure obviously-  but like I said I am sure it is way different out west- ive  hunted out west a good bit so,, but wish yall the best and happy hunting

just my 1 or 2 cents on this

Appreciate the feedback guys. I agree that the smart hogs will adapt. They have already adapted to the heli hunting in many places. The ROVIR unit that is mounted to your vehicle is certainly a game changer. These guys are riding the roads taking video of groups of hogs in fields at night. They will show it to the landowners and ask for permission to hunt it. The guys that know how to use it are lethal with it on hogs, predators, and fur bearers.

The main impact is landowners thinking they no longer need dogs if they have shooters and choppers. Still cant get the smart ones without dogs.

Great point Jameson......we face a lot of competition for hunting territory today. Deer hunters, turkey hunters, dove hunters, predator hunters, heli hunters, legislature wanting to legalize poison, etc. Wealthy urban population buying up ranches who are not friendly toward doggers. This very issue drives a lot of people out of hunting dogs altogether.
-
I fear that hunting has the potential to become a cost & access prohibitive past time.
-
The one card we have to play is that most people love dogs. Well mannered, well cared for hunting dogs with respectful owners help improve our reputation. I try real hard to represent us as good people. I can’t tell you how many people have told me they thought hog doggers were all scoundrels and criminals until they saw a few good examples of respectable dog men/women.
