Sitting around the ranch yesterday evening with Seth and we got the wild hair to go hunt. So we loaded up a little after dark and hit the Trinity ranch. Hunting the high fence and we get to back corner and I think I hear a dog open, ole Rock was 600 sat up behind the ranch house hammering away. Sketch, Boo, Murphy and Guero get there and they got him hemmed up. We go around and see they have him bayed against the netwire yard fence. Dogs were getting pretty tight on him, and he looked like such a good barr prospect I told Seth to hold off on shooting and tried to get them to back up, or commit to catching him.

Well it proceeded to get pretty Western for a minute but Boo and Rocky got hooked up on him once he made it to the barn and I got him legged and tied.

We load the hog and decide to hit the low fence, get back there and not very long sketch thinks she's got something lined out. She makes some big circles and lines out into the neighbors of course, she gets to about 600 and opens, she's got a group in the pasture. Right about that time Rocky lets out at about 250 the other way. Sketch is in the neighbors and I don’t really want to fool with it so I tone her back and she goes to the bay. We go and kill another good little boar hog. Continue on. About 12:15 Sketch and Boo strike hog number 3 and no sooner do they settle in a bay, the sky opens up and a big lighting bolt cracked damn near on top of us and the hog broke, dogs weren’t sure which way was up, so we said piss on it and called it a night while we were ahead.

This was a really cool hunt because Rocky has been put up for about 5 months until now. Me and him weren’t seeing eye to eye last year so I quit using him, gave him some time to get his mind right. My buddy Seth is keeping me in hogs while I’m still trying to get some roots planted here in Beeville and he needed a good solid strike dog, so I gave him Rocky just the other week and this is his 3rd hunt since and he acts like he got his head in the right place now.

Sounds like a good hunt, what was the dog doing that you didn’t like?

Just being aggravating, we use him on cows a lot, he was starting to get pretty bad about wanting to bay cows while hog hunting, when he had always been pretty good about staying honest to what we were doing. And his bottom on a running hog fell off a lot.
