On the quest to be a dog man.

I’m gonna miss the big hunt at the Webb next weekend, so I went down to estill to hunt with my buddy Joseph. We loaded the buggy up and went to his friends lease in yemasee. I brought Scooter, my older cur that i never really messed with because he is open, and my female pup Betsy. He brought a handful of older dogs. We rode for about 30 minutes with dogs looking good and staying busy. Betsy was really impressing me, she’s starting to get the hang of hunting with the buggy and staying up ahead of it. Her and Scooter both opened up when we got to an area and all the dogs were acting piggy but they weren’t rolling out. They stayed right around 100yds for about 10-15 minutes really not doing anything. I think it was a cold track they were trying to line out.

Then a few of them cut over to our right and starting rolling out. Betsy tried to hang with the big dogs but showed treed at 280yds and wouldn’t really move. Scooter went with the other dogs and popped trees a little over .5 away. We get around to them and they’ve got a nice little sow caught in the ditch on the side of the road. We decided to kill her and then get back to my pup and pick her up. I walked in to her and she was sitting on some dry ground surrounded by water with floating logs crossed over each other. She was scared to cross those logs with them going all different directions. I finally got her back over to me, and was irritated at first because I’ve caught 3-4 hogs now where she’s been somewhere else and hasn’t been on the pig. I’ve only had her on 2 pigs so it’s been frustrating. But, at the end of the day she was ranging out and hunting, and trying to stick with the old dogs so i can’t complain much. Just gotta get her a little more comfortable with water. Her first experience with water was her jumping out of the boat following an older dog and almost drowning in the river, so I’ve been working with her on swimming. I think she’ll make a dog with some more time in the woods

Yeah sometimes it takes longer for pups to not get hung up on water.  Some don’t mind it at all and others will make u get wet getting em back.  Lol.  Good sow man

Lol I’ve got other dogs that love swimming. I thought I ruined this one after she jumped off the boat and about drowned, but she’s slowly getting more confident with her. The logs were throwing her off. She will cross a single log fine, them being on top of each other and going different directions had her confused i think lol

Sounds like your dogs are coming around...
I know many hog doggers like silent dogs...giving that open dog a chance might surprise you...

Reuben, when I was overseas my mentor hunted his littermate brother for me. When I got back he was on fire at 16 months. I had a dry spell where I didn’t catch pigs for a few  months and he got bored and decided to start trashing again. He was open and the pigs where I hunted at that point ran so bad a open dog would ruin a hunt unless he was on a good track and would stick in a race for a while, those hogs didn’t like to bay. I put Smokey in the house as my wife’s pet. His brother scooter never got much of a chance for the same reason. I had no true finished dog to run him with that would stick the pig so him being open was messing up hunts. I’m trying to start bringing him with my buddies older dogs now that I don’t have much to run

Why not mess with the dog because he is open? I don’t care who you are or where you hunt, if you think open dogs cant bay hogs where you hunt, you are wrong.

I’ve seen a select handful of open dogs bay hogs on that land, but it’s rare and leads to a long race that I couldn’t ever shut down with young dogs. I watched an old finished dog that was open run a pig for 12 hours before he was finally called off. Those pigs are dog smart, my mentor hunted there 5-6 days a week for 10-12 hour hunts. He trained dogs for people and did guided hunts for a living so he hunted like a job. As soon as they hear a dog bark they hit the river and will zig zag back and forth trying to lose the dogs. Running silent dogs that catch have much better results there. I would rather shut the pig down in 500 yards than run it for 3 miles through the swamp and across water.

I think most of it is due to how hard and often those pigs have been hunted for 10 years, but I’ve seen quite a few people leave there empty handed, and they had good dogs. It was the biggest property I had to hunt but by no means was it my favorite. I can go some places and catch 2-3 pigs in an hour. That’s pretty good for around me. That place on the other hand, you would have to hunt for 6-8 hours to kill a single pig sometimes. Plenty of pigs there, they’re just smart. The property was so big too it was hard to find where they were.
