Me and Zach took 2 puppies and his young dog named Pup out this morning. This property has a road that’s a few hundred yards coming in to it, then it stops and there’s a trail. We always turn the dogs loose at the end of the road/beginning of the trail. Walking in my Betsy pup started winding and getting excited. We cut them loose and they took off like a rocket, 30 seconds later they all 3 started opening, a few seconds after that we hear a nice scream. They caught but the hog broke, went 30 yards and they had a good sow bayed in some thick stuff, backed up to a root ball.

I tried to coax them in to catching but they wouldn’t, the sow charged and they backed up a hair and I got a shot off. I tried to pop her right behind the ear, but was filming with my left hand and shooting with only my right hand. I tried to be quick while the dogs were out of the way and was shooting through leaves too, I ended up hitting about 4” low. We never shoot pigs so this was an on the fly decision since they weren’t catching. The pig broke another 20-30yds and bayed in another thick group of trees and vines. We started to them and then they caught again.

Zach ran in and legged her and I stuck her, been a long time since I’ve stabbed one. I usually let whoever I’m with do it so I can get a video. Drug her back to the truck and called it a day. Betsy is around 13 months old, Chalupa is 12 months, and I think Pup is around 18-20 months. Trying to get these young dogs going, we got out ran at night a few weeks ago in the same spot. I’m glad they’re figuring out how to stop the pigs

Thanks guys, they didn’t have to work for this one lol. They bayed it 60yds from where we turned them loose, but it was great to get these pups thinking about the right thing... we decided to call it quits and load them back up instead of risking a longer hunt with no more pigs and them getting bored. Hoping they make the connection that as soon as they’re turned out, they need to have hogs on their mind. I’m really pleased though, I’m not running them with anything older so it’s nice to see them make it happen. Betsy and Chalupa have only been on 3 pigs before this. Neither one of them found those pigs. Pup has been on probably 40-50 pigs but he’s not a strike dog, Zach used to run him with a bulldog on small properties, he stays within 75yds unless he jumps one and then will go about 500-600yds on it. He’s more of Zach’s pet than anything, he’s 3/4 pit and 1/4 German Shepard
