I too watched my Raylynn gyp get bit while baying in the edge of a tank (pond). I've always used dex, or benadryl, and antibiotics. I've used alum paste for cuts a few times. I was taught to use caster oil with it instead of water because it clings better. It did work well. Caster oil tastes great too so it's really inviting for a dog to lick lol.
