I had a dog get bit by a snake on her snout about a week ago and now it’s got her whole head swollen. What are somethings I can do to treat her instead of taking her to the vet and spending a ton of money?

Nothing if it's been a week ...more than likely going to burst where its swollen. Most dogs if it's a bad case don't recover 100%. Good luck.

A week is a pretty long time  but you can try children's benadryl. Dexamethasone would be what I would give. It's an anti-inflammatory steroid. It's likely what a vet would give. Swelling around the neck and head can get bad enough to restrict their breathing. This probably won't do that but the way I am, why let it continue to get worse if you can prevent it.

I’d give the dex like t-dog said and run a round of antibiotics thru her also.  Are you sure it’s a snakebite? I’ve never seen the swelling last that long from one.

I quit worrying about copperhead and cottonmouth bites. They will swell up for a few days and then they are back to normal. Rattlers are another ballgame and if a dog gets bit by a big one, he is going to die more then likely.  Make sure to take the collar off. Dex and benedryll sure cannot hurt anything  tho. I had a Lab that was bit by a black widow on the muzzle. His whole head swelled up like a basketball and I was in a area where there were no snakes. I turned over his doghouse and I bet there were at least 20 black widow spiders there. It finally abcessed and necrossis set in and rotted half his muzzle off.

Cajun...I to do worry about copperheads nor cottonmouths snakes...hunt the dog and he will get over it sooner than later...

I have had one get bit by a rattler and she survived...
A friend of mine says a dog will not survive a rattler bite if bit In certain places close to vital parts...

A couple years ago I had one get bit on the leg and it’s whole leg was swollen for over a week...no snakes in area nor fang marks...didn’t find any spiders but I was thinking brown recluse...do recovered completely without any scarring...

Like already mentioned...after a week that dog should be getting better...

Rattler behind the front shoulder has been pretty deadly From what I’ve seen. Me and my vet just talked about this the other day. Copper head and cotton mouth not to bad usually. As stated, outside of secondary infection set in, 7 days later dog should be either dead or pretty well over it if it is a snake bite.

I had a young dog get bit by a spider on the foot. It got so swollen that it dislocated her toes and when it finally ruptured, it blew the entire main pad of the foot off.  It ruined a good young gyp. I would have lost her completely had I not been pumping the antibiotics and dex to her. I used really strong dosage of antibiotics because they are less effective when given with dex.

Just had this happen. Bit on nose. Head swelled up did the usual - collar off and Benadryl. Everything was fine. One day after he was back to normal head swelled back up. Turned out to be an infected salivary gland due to the bite. 10 straight days of dex and antibiotics and it went down. Just make sure you give a full round. I thought I had it whipped after three days and stopped. Had to start all over again.

A guy I used to hunt with had a big RCD that I hunted a lot. He called me one day and was worried the dog was gonna die, he had gotten bit in the face multiple times by a 6ft rattle snake before he killed the snake. I gave him Benadryl and amoxicillin and he was normal and hunting 3-4 days later

Well this deal looks too good to be true, $300 anti-venom on sale for $50 but with all the BS going on right now its worth a look.

That’s not correct ... I have had dogs bit while baying or caught on a hog where there not even paying attention about a snake. Also while there running wide open Thru the brush and step on a snake while chasing a hog. I snake break mine and still get them bit . I had a cat treed one time and a snake curled up under the tree got 3 dogs before they realized what was happening !  I carry dex with me and powdered alum. My grandad always told me to make a paste with  powdered alum and water when a dog gets bit and it will not swell up as bad . I’ve  done it a lot and it works . If a dog is hot and gets bit in the body it’s usually not good . I’ve had  a bunch get bit in the head and lower legs and all made a full recovery .

Timbers are far and away a much worse bite than a diamondback in my opinion. We have them thick on our ranch in central Texas. They bite first rattle second.

Get to hear from you JP...well it be correct in they will stay away from a snake if they know it’s there...fighting a hog or treeing hard I can see a dog could get bit multiple times...

Slim..,what’s the biggest Timber Rattler you’ve seen...as a kid my uncle killed one a little over 6 ft and it was 3 inches in diameter at its thickest...that at least 55 years ago...

About 40 years ago I killed a western diamondback about that size hog hunting in the salt grass off the coast...
