Looking at buying some kennels that are 4x6 with a barrel on the outside seems small but people are saying it’s not what are y'all's thoughts?

I personally think it’s a little tight. Mine are 5x10, but I turn them out everyday for 15-20 minutes. I would think you’d be ok if they got out to stretch a little and cleaned them out daily. If a dog works daily then obviously that size is fine, but I only hunt once or twice a week on average.

I hunt once a week, sometimes only once every other week. My kennels are 6x10 and I have to clean them every other day or every 3rd day. That size gives them enough room to move around decent but I would not want to go smaller than that unless they were getting out more

My nephew bought some kennels were 4x8 or so. The 8 was ok but a big dog can literally touch both sides of the kennel at once. If they aren't getting out every day to move, it will have an affect on them. Dogs do get pen stale and they will go stir crazy. My kennels are 6x10 or larger depending on which pen they are in. I personally think my dogs on cable runs do the best. The cable run is about 30' or more long. The cable runs about waist high so I can mow under it and I don't clothesline myself either and I can step over it. The chain on it is 10' so the dog basically has a 20x20 run space. They are spaced so that there is about 4' of space between the dogs if they were to the end of the chain facing each other. That way there is no tangling, fighting, or accidental breedings. I used
2 7/8" pipe on the ends to run my cable through and they buried 4' deep. I dug a 2' post hole centered the pipe and then drove it the last 2'. I rotate my dogs regularly too. This helps with socialization and getting pen stale etc. I also move them so that if someone comes to permanently borrow one they have to look around and take more chance of being seen because the dog wasn't where it was last they saw it. Sorry for the rant.

I have 6 5x8s and I feel like they are sufficient for 1 dog each. I let mine all out a couple times a week to run and don't have any issue except the hole in the butts pickin off my chickens lol.

I'm not a fan of kennels.      To me its kinda cruel.     I like  really big pens or minimum 20' chains and maybe 1 in the house if it will serve as guard dog as well as hunting dog.

Not cruel Dean. To me it’s peace of mind that I don’t have to worry about them getting out or a stray wandering up to pick a fight or breed something. My dogs will flat crawl out of a pen if they wind a pig by the house. Chains are outlawed here in Parker county. Too many damned do gooders moving in wanting to call in on you cause they don’t understand that I can give them more exercise on a chain.

Clean kennels, fresh water system, turn out yard with water trough - hardly see that as cruel.

nice jsh, i like how yours have the barrels and a place to lay up off the floor. Those waters are huge for mosquito's. seems like I have to change water every 2-3 days bc of m. larva filling them this time of year. How do you deal with that?

Make em squeel -  on the hot days about half of those dogs wil jump in and sit in them. Another reason for the size is I don’t have to worry about them knocking them over or pissing in them. As you can see above every tub is a water nozzle. The combination of  topping them off every day and a little chlorine in them help with mosquitoes. I found the cheapest ways to buy one 3 inch chlorine tablet at Walmart and bust it up with a hammer. I just threw a very small piece in each one to help with algae and mosquitoes.  About once a week I completely dump them out and brush them down with a dish brush. It’s a great chore for the kids.

I have had 6x12, 5x12, 5x10, and 4x8, and if you are only putting one dog in per kennel there is no difference in their activity level that I saw, your consideration would be how often do want to have to clean kennels. To me kennels are not for exercise they are just housing and I clean kennels everyday so I prefer 4x8 if I am only putting single dogs in. I have a routine that I do everyday in which I let the dogs out to run around while I clean the kennels and water and feed. So they are out of the kennels 30-45 min everyday and I hunt them once or twice a week during summer and more when it cools off.

If you are looking for activity then cable runs are the way to go, with chain setups being a runner up. Like T dog said they will be far more active on those than they will in a kennel. Some dogs will keep themselves in decent condition themselves on cable runs.

I suspect you will want a better pulley than that plastic one and if you choose to do it over head beware of going out there in the dark. I had that chain slap me upside the head one night. That thing came down the next day.

I had 945 kennels in Cleveland Tx make me a 5 hole kennel that are 5x6 and they sit on skids. Plenty of room for the dogs in my opinion and the kennels are pretty damn tough too!
