Early last week one of the only landowners I still hunt for back home sent me a picture of a hog track in the county road. Said it had been a pretty decent hog hanging out on the south side of his place, and asked if I would come make a run at him. I had the time Sunday morning so I met Dauntae and my old buddy Tim at the gate at 7.
7:30 or so we send 7 cur dogs south and they hunted and came up empty. We were sitting in a fresh cut hay field and I couldnt find any sign of any kind of hog in the area in that field or on the tank to our left. Dogs kept acting really interested in going west but wind was wrong and it was open cattle pasture that direction.
No sooner the time we decide to go hit the north side of the place. I hear Dauntae “look at that big daddy didn't marry mommy”. I turn to see what appears to be a large black bear just strollin towards us coming out of that set of cows he gets about 150 yards from us and either catches us in the wind or hears us sending dogs to him. One way or the other he threw that head up and I knew it was fixing to be a race. He lit out and all 7 cur dogs was trying to walk him down.
About 500 yards into the race he crosses the county road into 300 acres of solid white flower Rose Hedge. And he had a lot better lead on them than I’d have liked him to. 50-60 yards maybe. They caught up to him in another few hundred yards and turned him and got him going north deeper into the rose hedge but headed for mustang creek. Then pretty quick they turned him back west and we watched him cross a little clear hill and they were burnin his ass up. He turned back north east went another 4-500 or so and put him up bayed.
We grab bulldog and head to them. Get there and Tim and Dauntae realized I wasn’t joke when I said they better had brought their big girl panties cause that rose hedge is no joke. It took us probably a half hour to figure out how to get into the jungle they were in to try and see if we could even get him caught. We finally army crawl in close and we’re on top of em baying. Tim Sends weezy and Dauntae sends CiCi and weezy hangs up for half a second and I thought we were introuble. He gets free, they both hit and stuck him like good bulldogs should. I walk around the corner to realize they are in this hogs nest. Which I can only describe as a hollowed out dome about 10 ft in diameter with only one entrance and it ain’t but a rabbit hole. The rose hedge was so thick you really couldn’t see much more than silhouettes and feet. It took every bit of 5 minutes of use walking in circles trying to find a way in. Finally he fought his to that rabbit hole and showed Tim his ass and he got a leg. I grabbed another and we jerked him out of there and got him killed. Sketch and the bulldogs took some pretty good cuts under their chins, one of Dauntae’s young dogs took a decent cut to inside of a back leg but for what it was, we came out way ahead.

The biggest hog I’ve ever killed with my dogs was 286 hanging. This hog was bigger. I won’t say he was heavier, but he definitely wasn’t any lighter. Sure wish we could have gotten him to a scale cause we all thought he would get us into the 300 club. He was an absolute tank. After that whole ordeal we went back to the trucks. Put dogs up. Drank a couple beers and told some reride stories, and we’re all headed our separate ways by 10 o clock.

Tim, Sketch, and I

Dauntae me and CiCi.

If you know anything about me from any of my post it’s that I ain’t real big on using catch dogs. I’ve just been in too many binds and lost to many good cur dogs because of sorry ones, but I still like to go with a couple good ones I trust every now and then. Tim’s Weezy dog and Dauntae’s CiCi dog and go to my dogs bayed any time. They are legit.

Nice hog and good story Slim...

When I was growing up we had lot of rose hedges...many of the fence rows were hedge...me and my little brothers made a big dome club house in the rose hedges by our house with a tunnel to get there...pretty good times kicking back in there with the hunting dogs...

Rueben that rose hedge is a different animal. Anybody thinks they hunt some sure enough bad country I will gladly take them to this little slice of heaven in Sweet Home, Texas.
Green briars, black brush, palmettos, saw grass, river cane, if you got it on your mind you can tuck your head and go to crawling or walking.
You ain’t tucking your head and going through no rose hedge. It just ain’t happening, that stuff when it gets bad don’t even let light in. This place will make you really question just how bad you want to catch that hog.

No doubt...you have to look the hedges over before turning the bulldog in...a person might not make it in unless they have a machete as a minimum...

Rose hedges over fence lines are better than barbed wire fence...no fence maintenance required...
