Started by treeing walker coonhound bitch ( Mr Reds) and the the neighbors standard Schnauzer
Mr Guthrie ( red)later added in Fox terrier and patterdale blood.
He also used a staffordshire male and two female two welsh females.  The pups were later used in the program.

Jake is right on the money but since I like to talk, I will add some details.

In the 1908’s Red was out In west Texas and his neighbor’s papered schnauzer accidentally bred his treeing Walker.

All these pups were jam up hunters so Red put them over a line of gritty Fox Terriers that were being used in the Big Bend country as Trapline dogs.

This breeding had Patterdale added and the result was the Texas Terrier which came in rough and smooth coat, which solid reds like this dog showing occasionally.



After many generations size was being lost (25lbs is standard size) so Red crossed his bulldog “Junk” over some Welsh & Lakeland terriers and this cross was bred in and the size was recovered.

This was a red Texas Guthrie Terrier, the red would crop up in the rough and smooth coats and were great trapline dogs

Tdog & Austesus thank you for the kind words.

Yessir Red put a lot of thought into these dogs, and reading his letters he was not shy about culling and the results prove it.

Tboe is a great example he was a dog that came back to the kennel after living 4 years as a house pet.
Passed a pen test with flying colors and worked him into Doc’s pack with no trouble at all.

Tboe then went to live with a former Texas Terrier owner (Aaron the Beard) where he fell right in line and is now hunting big coons up in Nebraska.

I want to thank BoomerGuthrie & Aaron the beard for working these dogs and helping continue the line.

I would also like to thank NorthStar for all his advice and help, it’s a rare thing to find someone who is both generous and a man of his word, Nothstar is both and in spades.

Great expectations for the future of these dogs, just need this arctic stuff to blow through and a bitch or three to go into heat!

Aaron the Beard sent me this pic of him and BoomerGuthrie on the left introducing a young hunter to the joys of hunting with dogs!

Cajun if I remember right Beard told me this one went about 35lbs

BoomerGuthrie showed that young man how to skin a coon and said he was over the moon about it!

That looks like a high 20s to low 30s. I have hunted more that a few of them. They are big enough to make most dogs with they were in a show ring.

Thank you for the kind words Sir. I am always willing to help true like minded individuals out. If it is with the knowledge I have picked up over the years since most common folks think it is useless or putting dogs in hands that will hunt them. I only pray to get the same in return. If more did this we would all be hunting better dogs.
