from Texas Parks and Wildlife comments section Hunting Proclamation

"The department has now determined that the practice of hunting deer with dogs is no longer a resource threat anywhere, but is concerned that a complete removal of regulatory provisions designed to thwart that practice in certain counties could result in a resurgence of the activity. Therefore, the proposed amendment would allow not more than two dogs to be used to trail wounded deer in all counties in Texas, but in Jasper, Newton, Sabine, and San Augustine counties, a person using a dog to trail a wounded deer would be required to keep dogs on a leash held by a person at all times the dog is used to trail a wounded deer."

https://tpwd.texas.gov/business/feedback/public_comment/proposals/202103_hunting_proclamation.phtml

The comment section is at the very bottom of the page

Proposed Amendment to 65:19 would allow 2 unleashed dogs for blood trailing purposes in all counties except those listed before in East Texas.

In Jasper, Newton, Sabine and San Augustine counties up to two dogs would be allowed, on leash at all times.

I think this is a great move as I have good buddies who have a lease in Jasper county and are starting to take some nice deer thanks to a self imposed 15" rule that's been in effect for 5 years now.

If anyone is interest in helping me start a group to advocate for Texas dog hunters of ALL types please send me a message.

I contacted Stormy King several months ago when I considered trying to start a group like this and wanted to lobby for this exact change to the law about blood trailing dogs in east Texas.

He told me the issue would actually be up for debate very soon and to keep my eye out and organize once the comment period was announced so here we are.

I have a real interest in this issue because my first effort into hunting dog training was blood trailing with my cur, and I used a tracking lead because I was without GPS at the time.

But I also want to work with all hunting dog owners of all types to not just keep our rights, but to expand them when we have the opportunity.

My name is Monty Hanson, I may have introduced myself before not sure lol

You can message me here or email @ HuntingismyHeritage@gmail.com

If you do not want to be involved with a group please take the time to comment in favor of this change to allow the deer hunters in East Texas every tool to recover their harvest and participate in hunting with dogs.

I wasn’t aware that deer hunting with dogs was banned in Texas. Here in SC it’s wayyy more popular than hog hunting. We have a lot of big clubs that are exclusively for guys running deer dogs. Hopefully y’all can gain some ground in the fight. I think it’s the wrong approach to just try and fight against restrictions. We should all be pushing for MORE rights. If you’re not moving forward you’re stagnant, and that leads to loss and failure. That applies to almost everything in life. That’s also why gun control has been a losing battle for many years. Too many people only care about trying to hold their ground instead of gaining it.

I would love to see deer hunting with dogs in Texas, the outlaws in East Texas were a big part of why it was banned in Texas and why for years hunters could not trail wounded deer with dogs.

Sad for it to go on for so long in Texas, New York state has a single blood trailing dog on lead (Euro style) law since 1984 almost the same time frame deer hunting with dogs was banned in Texas.

This is a step in the right direction by TPWD and I hope to see more of the same.

To clarify the following counties

( Angelina, Hardin, Nacodogches, Orange, Shelby & Tyler counties)

also had a ban on blood trailing dogs for whitetail

under the proposed amendment they would be regulated the same as the the rest of Texas

2 dogs max unleashed for blood trailing whitetail.

The amendment will allow blood trailing dogs for whitetail in all Texas counties

Pleas visit the link and leave your comments

I will to help. That being said I don’t Tiktok, or put my Face in a book much any more. I am willing to help though. We all need to do something for these working dogs in one form or fashion.

The following modifications and clarifications to the 2021-22 Statewide Hunting Proclamation have been adopted by the TPW Commission:

Remove the prohibition on trailing wounded deer with dogs in Angelina, Hardin, Nacogdoches, Orange, Shelby, and Tyler counties; In addition, allow the trailing of wounded deer to no more than two dogs on a leash in Jasper, Newton, Sabine, and San Augustine counties

This is a step forward by TPWD for east Texas deer hunters who would like to train their own blood trailing dogs to aid in game recovery.
