My oldest son Jr and I met my buddy Keldon this morning and made a round. Jr and debated about where to turn out and decided to go the north end where the creek meets the river. We cast the dogs thinking they were going to have to hunt hard to dig something out but nope, 200 yards out they bayed a group in open woods. These are really wild hogs so I wasn’t surprised when they busted. Another 200-250 yards and they were bayed. When we got there it was a decent sow and we sank her ship. Everything just flowed so easy. I legged her, Keldon stuck her, and Jr got the bulldogs off. That’s the way it’s supposed to go. We bayed again and sent the bulldogs but missed him. I say him because we smelled that boar hog perfume he was wearing. We couldn’t see in there so I can’t say why it happened. The dogs stayed gone for a long time but finally started to trickle back in. We got one or two called in and then went around to where Ava was and called her in from about 600. So if nothing else the dogs got some running in on a ridiculously humid morning and a good time with two good guys.

That’s the way it’s suppose to go.  Good dog work to hang in this humidity.  I don’t know if I’ve said it before.  But I hate the summer.

I caught the dogs because I myself was hot.  The young dogs were hot but not to the point of ready to fall out. I think it was more to the point that they were hot and even more frustrated that they couldn’t find him again. At one point no two dogs were together, they were all in different directions. We had 3 of mine, one of Jr’s, and one of Keldon’s on the ground. Ava was the only experienced dog, so the rest of them are still trying to figure things out. I wish now that I had left Ava down. I wish I had gotten close enough to her that I could’ve sent the young dogs to her. I really think she would’ve bayed him again. I’ve seen what happens to heat stroked dogs and I let that override my training instincts. I guess next time I can do it knowing the handled the heat better than I thought.
