Didn’t hunt much the week of Christmas due to work. Had the week of 12.27 - 12.31 off so I was looking forward to hunting the pads off these dogs while on vacation. Took Sandy, Rousty, Jet, and Carlos out Tuesday morning. Dropped the bay dogs on a feeder and came up empty. Drove to another spot and dropped them again. They hunted out about 300 yards and Sandy came back in. Loaded her up and checked Rousty on the Garmin. He was .75 and climbing through a nasty creek bottom/draw. He worked another few minutes and started making tight circles and set off the bark detector. I headed to him and stopped about 300 yards out. Let Sandy out and got the catch dogs ready. About the time I headed to him, Sandy jumped a group to the south. I heard her catch a shoat so I headed to Roustys bay. Got about 100 yards out and heard Sandy fall in with him. Bay was holding. Got 40 yards out and realized they were in a rough briar patch. I busted the bay to get to a better spot. Had a walking bay for a good 15 minutes. Sandy got quiet but a Rousty was barking every breath. Suddenly Rousty got quiet and Sandy was bayin like never before. Got about 200 yards out and both dogs were bayin. Cut Carlos & Jet and caught a nice boar hog. - Both bay dogs earned a trip to the vet and some R & R. I was proud to own them but realized I am risking too much with Sandy. She’s causing wrecks because she just not a bay minded dog.

You said they were holding the bay and you busted it. Then had a walking bay. Sounds like she shut the hog down and did her job to me. Not trying to criticize you, but I don’t see her fault?
Good hogs.

No worries Jeff. She did not and does not shut hogs down. This particular boar didn’t really want to run and probably would have rebayed sooner if she wasn’t pressuring him. It worked out, the boar bayed in more open country and gave the catch dogs a clean shot. - Her fault is that if she is on a hog for more than a couple minutes, she stops baying it and starts getting in too close nipping at it like a Heeler. She then gets ran over/rolled up causing the other bay dog(s) to jump in to help her. Then they get wrecked with her. If she’s in a sounder, she will harass them, make them run, and catch a shoat. She would rather escalate the conflict than bark/bay. I’ve hunted her quite a bit and watched her work hogs enough to understand her. She needs a home with a pack of rough dogs or a pet/ranch Home. Your welcome to her if your looking for something like her. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I get what you mean about her. There’s definitely a right time and a wrong time to get ahold and pinching is never a good option. She’s kinda like a school yard bully. She wants to loud talk the little guy and act tough until it hits the fan and then she hollars y’all get get him. The only thing she is committed to is making trouble. One really bad trait that overshadows all the good.

Yes sir T dog. You have her pegged. I have been somewhat kennel blind about her because I like her a lot as an individual. She’s a sweetheart around the house, handles like a dream, straight on hogs, good nose, nice little find dog. She’s the kind of dog that will get you into bad habits like pitching your catch dogs from too far out or rushing into bays because you know it’s just a matter of time before she gets too tight and causes a break or a wreck. I’ve been sending her to bays, which I don’t like to do, in hopes that she would figure it out. She looks great on hogs that don’t want to run that are not big or rank enough to hurt the dogs. You get away with it a hunt or two and think she has it figured out. You keep running her with your good bay dog because you think she’s got it. Then you get on a rank one and realize she can’t help herself. She’s 16 months old and has already spent two weeks at the vet. It’s just her breeding coming out. She’s a scatterbred catahoula, Kelpie, bulldog mix. The longer she’s on a hog, the more the bulldog/kelpie traits show up. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Thanks Cajun & Shady. - NLA…..you are 100 % correct. It’s not a matter of IF but WHEN with her. I’m working on a good ranch home for her. Time to move on.

I am not a dog breeder or Kelpie expert by any means, but why would someone cross a kelpie and a bulldog? I know every breed has its exceptions, but to me that explains why she can’t make up her mind whether to nip or commit.
Sometimes dogs get in tight spaces and have no choice to engage to defend themselves, but sounds like she’s different.
Jump said something about her, but if she’s not stopping hogs either I don’t even think she’d make a hand with a rough pack. Thanks for the offer.
Good luck. May try one of those females you gave him. They’d be a good help to your male for sure, but won’t outstrike him.
