On the quest to be a dog man.

Well, hunting really hasn’t been enjoyable for me after my Ranger dog died. I’ve been forcing myself to go, just waiting on my pups to get older with the hope that they make the cut and make it fun again. Haven’t posted too much but I’ve been killing some hogs here and there. I’ve got about 6,000 acres on the river that has probably 1,000-2,000 acres of corn planted so I’m patrolling that about every other day to try and keep the pigs out of it. It’s been a half arsed attempt since I’ve been running the b, or c team.

I took my female Bo Betty pup for her first few hunts last week but they were dry runs. We hunted Friday night on June 10 and she got to see her first pig caught. She did great on the boat and we killed a decent little boar hog on the first drop. She walked in with us and was interested in what was going on but didn’t interact. No biggie, I kind of expected that since I have hogs in a pen at the house and the dogs know I don’t let them mess with them. She has been going out with the other dogs and staying busy so far so I wasn’t concerned about it. I’ve seen quite a few dogs now that show no interest at a penned pig or the first one they see caught, but after the second one it seems like the light switch turns on.

I hunted Monday night and Red jumped one but we couldn’t get it stopped. He has been really frustrating me lately, he’s been inconsistent and just isn’t producing the pork. Loaded up last night on June 15 and Decided to take Smiley, my female pup Wanheda, and I decided to pull Wanheda’s mom out of retirement since I’m kinda down to my last leg of dogs to run. My buggy is down right now so I was going to walk, made it 10 minutes from the truck and caught a nice little boar. Mine winded him first, she slipped on the left side of the road. About 30 seconds after that I saw smiley stand up on his back legs winding and he shot off to the left, about 50yds further down from where Mine went in. Smiley hit the pig first, he barked a few times so I thought he was trashing (I’ve never heard him bark at a pig but he will bay the skin off of a turtle lol) everything went quiet and they were only a little over 150yds from me so I took my time picking through some thick vines and walked in to them expecting a possum or a raccoon. I got close enough to shine them with my headlamp and realized they were caught out on a hog. I got him flipped and stabbed with no trouble, and was thrilled to see my little pup on it.

His teeth were small so it surprised me when I found out that the old lady Mine had taken a few good hits on the shoulder, armpit, and on her lower cheek. Nothing too bad, just some good skin cuts. I decided to go ahead and leave though so I could get her cleaned up and stapled. The whole time out that little pup was winding like crazy and shooting in and out of the hedgerows. Time will tell but I hope she takes after her ancestors. So far she is showing all of the right mannerisms and traits and reminding me a lot of her half sister Punk.

Oops, I meant to post this picture as well. This is from our boat hunt on the 10th, took the pic right as we were about to put in. Smiley is in the back and my pup Wanheda is in front of him.

They look good. I’m glad you see hope  in them, you’ve for sure done your part of getting them to this point.

Thanks Thomas, my male pup won’t be started until I get his semen collected and frozen. I’ve also got two female pups that are full Parker Cur. Me and the wife made a road trip on New Years and got them directly from Mr. Parker’s yard. He only had 4 in the litter and was keeping two males so I got the two females. I’ve got high hopes for them and plan to start them in the fall once it starts cooling down. They’ll be right at 12 months in November. Larry said that he doesn’t start his until they’re between 12-16 months old so I’m changing up my usual methods and giving them a little longer to mature before I start them. Based off of their behavior in the yard I expect them to wind very well and have a lot of hustle when they hunt. Time will tell!

Time will tell for sure. I’m one that was taught to wait for the 12th month to start them. There are a bunch of them that can keep up physically at younger ages but the mental game is what you’re letting mature. I’ve seen some real nice young dogs that got in a jam and roughed up or cut up bad and it ruined them and littermates to them
That the same thing happened to later and they were fine. I’ve seen it more than once and the only reason it ruined one and not the other was the mental maturity the second one had reached.

Good story Austin…that’s a really good picture of your dogs in the boat and the dogs acted really well finding and catching that young boar…

I feel the same when losing my best or favorite dog…it takes some of the pleasure out of the hunt but after a while it works out…

Thanks Cheston, I loved my original black dogs, I hope the younger ones can fill their shoes and bring the blood back to life. I’ve taken my male on one hunt and he did good. I want to get him collected before I really start hunting him since he’s the only male left.
