I saw the forecast for 66 degree temps this mornin and decided to make a run.
-
Sent Rousty & Click up a draw with a creek runnin through it. Dogs were huntin real nice at a lope makin 450 to 500 yard loops. Rousty grabbed a track and took it 1.24 miles. Click fell in and they started getting too close to the road so I toned them back.
-
Recasted in another draw/bottom with some plum thickets on the edge of the creek. We hunted it for an hour or so and were not seeing any sign. I decided we were gonna pack it up and hit another spot. Toned em in and had them heeling following me out. They were fighting me wanting to hunt.
-
On the way back to the truck I dropped in the creek and came across a fresh wallow. Both dogs gave me the bird and went 300 yards up the creek and jumped up top. They took it 723 yards and bayed on the edge of a cutover. They were in new regrowth with brush and blood weed so dam thick & tall I could hardly get to em. Sent Carlos from 30 yards out. He hit and got hooked. Bay dogs piled on. I wallered around in there a while and got him legged & stuck.
-
Truly blessed to catch this hog where we did with no serious damage.

real nice.  better hunt than i had Sunday am.

we caught 1 small 100 lber, got on a nice one that bayed on top of a 2 story high hill of tall weeds and thicket when the cds ran up it jumped off right before they got there made a huge crashing thud and ran right past me
( should have sent 1 cd in and kept 1 back) with curs on it and got away after swimming like an Olympian. picked dogs up 700 yds away all wobbly legged from the heat, when the sun came up it got hot quick

I’ve experienced the same scenario many times bud. I feel your pain. Some of these hogs have what I call the “Jason Bourne” gene. Their will to survive is down right impressive.

I also reflect on hunts and try to make adjustments to be more successful in the future. Bay Management, when, where, and how to cut the catch dogs to a bay always comes to mind. It’s particularly difficult this time of year when the vegetation is so thick. I have come to the conclusion that the best you can do is to get as close as possible, pick the best path you can find, and send em.

I feel ya on the summer time huntin too. It can be stressful hunting in short time frames and worrying about dogs getting hot.
