Looks like my Steel dog is going to be retired. He has not put his leg down since we caught the big boar a month ago. Vet said it was a nerve and not a tendon. He also said there is a slight possibility that the nerve could regenerate but not not putting a lot of stock in that. I have had a lot of nerve damage over the years and had a lot of atrophy because of it. Steel n the hog that crippled him.

Sure hate that for you man,, Its hard to accept the loss of use of a good one that shouldve had plenty of time left..    If we wouldve picked up a easier way of life,, like sitting on the couch and eating popcorn in the a/c  no telling how easier life wouldve been..   LOL...  Who knows though,, he might surprise you and be up on all fours come January..  Hope so

I’ve seen that in a couple of dogs and it has always stayed drawn up. Saying that though, they all were three legged hog finding machines. Didn’t really slow em down much. Long races was a struggle, but you can pick him up, but if he’s got the heart and drive, I’d keep letting him find a few for me!

My mal was like that for 3ish months and hes 90% recovered from time and running him

FYI a great cheap way to regenerate nerves and ligaments is amazon Standard process, for nerve get neurotrophin pmg, for ligament/joint get ligaplex 1 or 11

Agree especially if it was a back leg bc they use it like a pogo stick, front legs not so much b/c they need them for cutting etc. My buddy had a 3 legged dog that died of old age striking hogs

I’m not sure I wouldn’t set up a pulley system across a stock tank and swim the heck out of him. My old yonder female had to have a leg amputated and she still got it done. I hope he recovers, I hope you don’t have to retire him, BUT…..at least you know what he is hunting wise so that you can use him as a stud if you need or want to. He’ll for sure make a pretty yard ornament if that’s what you do with him. Good luck

Sorry to hear that…he look young and strong and maybe not in his prime just yet…if his tendon isn’t cut thru I would spray cut heal on it 3 times a day…

Hate to hear that Cajun. My Cypress bitch had her Achilles severed by a boar 3 weeks ago my vet and I came to the decision to amputate the leg at the hip because she is constantly trying to use it. I'm still gonna hunt her probably just turn her out solo on tracks but she can't be breed anymore because another unfortunate event so I figure take her till she can't go.I imagine ol Steel will still get it done if you choose to hunt him but like T-dog said good luck in anyway you choose to go.

Sorry to hear about Steel Cajun. Hate it for you and the dog. I guess it’s in the water right now. My Click dog looks to be in the same situation. It’s been almost 3 weeks and he won’t put weight on his front left leg. He holds it at up at his shoulder. Just flops and dangles and folds up at the ankle when he tries to put weight on it. Vet took X-rays and didn’t see anything. You would think his shoulder was broke. Vet said it might be nerve damage. Dog is coming on 4 years old and just really getting nice. I had plans to start a pup behind him this fall/winter. Good dogs are hard to come by. This game we play will keep a man on the muscle just trying to stay in dogs. I run loose bay dogs 1 or 2 at a time to avoid this as much as possible. Still get bit in a$$ from time to time!

Best wishes on a full recovery for Steel….. but I’m bettin you aren’t dependent on just him to keep you in hogs!

Thanks guys   It’s a nerve that was damaged. Hopefully he will come back but not putting much stock in it. Steel is a pretty fair dog at 3 1/2 years. Not my coldest nose dog but you put him in sign and you want see him until he is caught. He was two before he finally started baying big hogs. If a hog stopped or he got close enough he was a caught hog. That being said he broke a lot of bays trying to catch big hogs but couldn’t hold them. He was better being hunted by himself where he would bay a big hog. I had a dog about 15 years ago that had to have his back leg amputated and he still ran in the front for about 3 hours.

Slim the nerve injection you’re talking about is only a temporary block. When they actually nerve a horse they attempt to cut a particular nerve.

Steel started putting his foot down but half the time his foot is just rolling over. I am going to put him on that Neurotrophin and put a boot on that back leg to make sure he put his foot down flat and hopefully he will come back. thanks Make em squeal
