How many times do y'all give a puppy their shots. I have had parvo on my place and I have been following this schedule that my Vet reccomends. I give them their first 5 n 1 shot at 6 wks. 3 weeks later I give a 2nd 5 n 1. One month later I give a 9 n 1 following another 9 n 1 a month later. Sounds like overkill but I have not had anymore problems with Parvo. Been doing this about 12 years or so. My Vet basically told me I was wasting money vaccinating before 6 weeks because the pups still have their immunity from their mother. He also said to vaccinate the female as soon as she comes in heat before she is bred. Just wondering what works for y'all.

I have been mentored about this two different ways but with the same thought process from both people. The first one was a coon/cow dog man of MANY years. He was like a grandfather to me. I was having a hard time with parvo. I told me to put my dogs on a good worming regimen and to make sure my brood gyps especially stayed clean or worm free if you will. He said that would allow me to raise pups. He said to there were two reasons pups got parvo. First was that they had a weak immune system and second would be that they were wormy (which breaks the immune system down). He said that he only vaccinated pups that were going to other people because he couldn’t control how they cared for the pups. He didn’t vaccinate the ones he kept all though, just wormed them strictly. He told me worming was easy and the ones that got it because they had weak immune systems weren’t anything that you wanted to breed to anyway. When I did like he said I quit having problems with it. The second guy was a greyhound friend that I’ve talked about before. He was also a hound guy. He said he only vaccinated his hounds to protect the greyhounds. The greyhounds are so tightly bred that their immunities are weaker. He said he would still lose some to it even vaccinating. Again he told me once he started a stricter worming regimen that he quit losing them as long as they were vaccinated. If I remember right they gave the gyp a modified live parvo booster two weeks before whelping. I lost a litter a few months ago and I blame myself because hadn’t stayed as strict as I had been about worming. I usually watch the gyp and how she is with the pups. If she starts acting like she’s fixing to try and wean them then I give them a vaccination shot because that first week of no momma is really stressful to them. That’s another vulnerable time for them. If they get weaned 5 to 7 days after that shot then it’s already in them plus they aren’t getting near as many antibodies from her those last few days. This litter I lost was a big litter on top of the fact that it was insanely hot. This caused her to wean them at about 4 1/2 weeks old. I said I’d wait a week and vaccinate but it bit me. I don’t know if giving it immediately would’ve saved them or not. Two of them made it out of the litter. One of them I never liked the other was one of my picks. They neither one quit drinking but did quit eating for a couple days. They would get up when I’d go
out there but you could tell they didn’t feel good. The others would show that they didn’t feel well and in a matter of hours or a day would be dead. I’m not sure the fever didn’t ruin this pup I kept. In some ways he’s super smart and at other times I think he’s a crackhead. I’ll never breed to him for lots of reasons but I would like to he if he possibly turns out. If he doesn’t turn out I won’t know if it was being sick, a bad cross, or both that caused it. If he does make it then I’ll know to try the cross again for sure.

About 4 or 5 years ago I lost an excellent quality pit bull pup at 10 months of age…a beautiful red 80 pound pup, lost him to parvovirus…when I bought him as a little pup he had received two 5 in one puppy shots…I asked my wife to pick up a 10 in one shot and she came home with a 9 in one shot…
I opted to give that vaccine to my wife’s Westie, instead thinking I would get a 10 in one for the red pup…long story short I totally forgot and he got Parvo…the veterinarian couldn’t save him on account they didn’t have the IV to hook him up…
The vet did say that Pitbull type dogs are a breed that are vulnerable to Parvovirus…in hindsight if I had given my pit pup the 9 way he would probably be here with me right now…

The feed store owner was and is hard headed…he said save your money and get the 9 way instead of the 10 way vaccine…he says Caronavirus has been eradicated…so I use a different feed store now that works with me on most anything…I use the 10 way no matter what…

My dogs stay consistently worm free on account they are on concrete and I clean up and wash down every day…might miss a day once in a while but not often..

This is what I do…I give the gyp her vaccines as an 8 week old pup and again at 12 weeks…both 10 ways…and that will be it for the life of the gyp, as it is the same protocol for all my dogs…no issues with this schedule…

If it is a litter that needs vaccines I order through Jeffers…

Worming…I keep a close eye on feeding amount, overall appearance and stool firmness on all my dogs…

I give heartworm preventative between 2 an 3 months intervals and give a heavy dose…my thinking on this is simple and based on this logic…from the time a dog gets infected until the heart worm reaches maturity is 6 months…so giving a heavy dose it will kill any larvae for at least 1 to two months maybe longer…so on the next dose the larvae can not be but one month old when they get hit with another big dose…been working for me as far back as I remember…
This dosing is probably helping keeping the intestinal worms under control but on that logic it would be pure speculation…

I raise mine in a kennel with the floor covered with those heavy rubber horse stall mats. At about 3 1/2-4 weeks I put them out in a run on the ground where they can get out and move. Never had a problem until this last litter.

I like your thought process on the subject - Reuben.

I do it very similar to what you have described with no issues.
