Myself and the nephew made another trip yesterday. Turns out that the drought actually is working in our favor right now. Everyone has had such a grazing and hay shortage that they can’t afford to lose anymore. We’ve had some rain lately and a lot people are planting late rye, oats, and wheat. I guess because they didn’t want to waste money on seed if we weren’t going to get the rain. A guy I hunt on when it isn’t deer season called and said hogs were turning him upside down could we help? So I called the guy behind him asked if he was deer hunting. He said I have a feeder going but the hogs are hitting me hard too. He said y’all go get’em and I’ll deer hunt later lol. So that’s what we did. The land owner said he saw a group of about 20, all big hogs. These hogs are usually runners and usually try to leave out the back door. We went around to their backyard and cast on the south end of this set of woods into the wind. I told Dillian that we were going to let them bay a little before we went into them because I was sure some hogs were going to try and come out the back door. We cast dogs and they went 450yards in a sprint and put up. We just sat there waiting and sure enough 6 toads came out trying to leave. Well it’s a good 3-350 yards to the next set of woods. So we hurried around ahead of them and sent Loki and JJ to them. We smoked two of those big sows. I’d guess them about 200 and 220-30. Dogs were still bayed but had moved a little. When we got to them they had a boar about 160 bayed under a cedar tree on the wood line opposite side of the woods we were on. Loki smoked him and the dogs rolled over, my Hope puppy included, and were bayed again at 700 yards. The hog wouldn’t stay put but soon as it zigged when it should’ve zagged, the bay dogs stretched his little 60 lb butt. He looked like a flying squirrel when I got to him lol, all spread out and not touching the ground. Hope wasn’t there on that and was back towards where they originally bayed this shoat. I guess when she heard the squealing she started to it but it was over before she got there. Again the dogs immediately rolled over again. Ava and Zeke  went one way and got bayed at .7 and Moon, Ranger, Outlaw, and Hope were 800 yards. We went to the closer ones and JJ caught a boar about 190ish in a tank. Those dogs left and went straight to Ava and Zeke. When we got over there they had a sow about 130 stretched in the edge of the water at another tank. The nephew said the water was extremely cold. I don’t know if it was but it did look wet. His voice kinda made me believe he was telling the truth and the dogs for sure were cold. We called it a hunt because anything we got on after that was probably going to be two counties over. The land owner was real happy so it was a good hunt. Got a couple picks of the bigger sows and the biggest boar. The others weren’t worth posting.

This is Hope baying like she likes it lol.

Excellent dog work and story…here lately the weather has been perfect for hog hunting…but I dread hogs caught in stock tanks and rivers this time of the year…

I hate it too Reuben. Buddy of mine made a “fishing line”. I think I’m gonna copy it. Pretty sure it’s just rope used for tying off boats. It’s about 20’-30’ long and he keeps it rolled up on a little flat spool. Has a snap on one end for the bulldog. Just cast him out, let him set the hook, and reel him in. He just keeps it on his buggy so it isn’t anything extra to carry on your person. Works best snapped to the vest at the shoulder D ring.

T-dog, that’s a good idea…a treble hook with the barbs grounded off…
Most of the places we hunt do not allow pistols but we can carry and use one shotgun…

About a month ago before the rains came I was heading towards the dogs while on a hunt…I came up to a crossing and in the canal next to the culvert was a 12 ft gator…one of my buddies dogs came up and was drinking water next to this gator…with all the whooping and hollering the dog comes out and the gator never moves…I am thinking the upper 50 degree night immobilized the gator…it got me to thinking I should start carrying one of my pistols  in my 4 wheeler pack and only use it in emergencies…if needed I can show my license to carry to the game warden and ask for forgiveness…not for using to kill gators but to just scare them off…

A big toothy boar in the cold water on a cold day will probably get some lead poison if the opportunity arises…

Another great hunt, Hope will make a dog getting her in those numbers or I Hope so, lol  I named a female Hope a couple years ago and decided to use her for a blood dog because she was all my breeding and on the gritty side and didnt want to lose her. The way Cheryl's son in law shoots and my daughter, I needed a blood dog. lol But in the end I just could not justify keeping a dog just for blood trailing so on hogs she went and she has done great.

Cajun I have had that same thought and intention for a dog or two but like you I just couldn’t justify it in the end. I’m glad she’s done well for you. Hopefully she will produce well too.

Reuben those gators are a terrible way to lose a dog. It’s always one of your favorites too it seems.

Shotgun that’s exactly what’s showing up. At least that’s what I tell folks. They aren’t as impressed when I say it actually comes from the collie, lol. Cajun seen it right off, lol. She has that little houndy locate too. I like it. She is brindle on her cheeks but you can’t tell it unless your right up close. That hound color pattern is super easy to get. I rarely have a litter without at least one. You could breed for it and get them coming nearly 100%. I think the catahoula color is beautiful but it seems like my chemistry always ends up being with the brindles, blacks, and hound colored ones.

Man you are stacking them up! Going out with solid numbers to end the year. Sounds like the dogs have been working hard and hustling. I’m glad to hear your Gyp Hope is turning it on, sounds like she’s on the right track.
