My brother has been wanting to go and I’ve been blowing him off lately. Well we don’t miss a Christmas Eve run if I’m home. Haven’t since highschool.

I knew where a set of hogs was and I thought we might could set it up and outsmart them, and bust their ass pretty good.

Put sketch down on the north end of east side of property and let her roll. She had a small boar on his feet in 3 minutes or so. My idea was knowing in years past those hogs try to break across the hay field we casted out of to get to the other big Mott of brush on the west side of the property. Set my brother up on his AR in the hay field. Send sketch, figured she’d bay the group I’d get around them and pick them off and push them west until they broke and had to cross that hay field .

It worked perfect. Except she didn’t bay a group. Just a small boar. I broke him west twice and he finally went for it. Broke out about 60 yards in front of my brother with sketch on his ass. She checked him up at about 100 yards and he smoked the hog.

Sketch rolled out back east. Goes to opposite corner from where we are set up and bays. I go and kill a decent sow she had bayed on the outskirts of the woods in a little oak stand. Sketch rolls 150ish back into big woods. Bayed. I break another good sow, this one with tons of pigs. out to the west twice but she found the pond and bayed a 3rd time so i shot her.

Sketch rolls back to the east to the same little oak stand the second hog was in. And bays a pretty good sow and a bunch of piglets under the next oak tree over

Tapatalk cut off half my post… killed that sow. Sketch rolled and came up empty.
We went to the west Mott and casted her. She went 400 to opposite corner and bayed a handful of hogs together on the edge of a duck pond. I got around her to push them back towards my brother. They go to break. I shoot a good sow, sketch leaves on another hog and I put a round in another really big sow.  Sketch rolls and puts a hog up bayed on the other side of the duck pond. I go watch and video her for a little from a distance. Then call my brother, told him grab my .44 come kill this hog. He got around to me and made a nice shot at about 40-50 yards across the pond.

Sketch rolled again and now it’s starting to feel like work. She put up 2 hogs together. I first saw them and thought 150lbs and maybe 40lbs. Then after they broke the 3rd time I bet. I watch her bay them all up and down a fence line. Still didn’t think the big one was over 200 and the little one wasn’t over 75 lbs. hit the big one center mass  broadside while they were walking bayed on the fence at about 60 yards with a 180gr. .350 legend. She didn’t even flinch. Packed it off. Finally she ran both hogs to my brother about 100 yards away. Bayed. He shot her with a 240gr .44magnum. She packed it off but she was hurt. She made it another 100 yards or so just to the property line. They both crossed the fence and bayed on the edge of the brush growed up in the fence. I finally got the bigger one face up and smoked her. Told my brother be ready. Sketch had that other hog right here. He poked his head back out on my brothers side of the fence and got shot.

Sketch rolls and I go to walk up on the bigger of the 2 hogs. Only when I got about 10 foot from her did I realize how big she was. Knew she had 270 covered but didn’t know if she’d make 300.

I’ve been chasing 300 for 8 years. Killed some I thought were close we couldn’t get to scales. Killed some only ended up going 280-90. Killed one Barr we knew was over but never weighed him and I didn’t have a dog out.

When the smoke cleared we ended with 10. 1 dog, 2 guns, 10 hogs dead. All killed in front of sketch.

I told my brother immediately when I walked up on her, we’re putting her on the scales at the feedlot.

Was a pretty proud moment to round that corner and see that scale bouncing between 305 and 310. Man I been chasing one, and it finally came in number 7 out of a 10 hog evening with a gyp I raised that got made in these same woods years ago.

That was a great hunt. Ole Sketch was really carrying the mail. Congrats on your big hog. 300# hogs are out there but they are not real common unless they have a insane amount of feed or they are Barrs.

Generally, hogs aren't as bad to leave the country from one back up and bark baydog, Sketch showed out and made a big pile of bacon.

Heck of a hunt there Slim. How old is Sketch now?

She for sure hasn’t lost a step yet. Congrats and welcome to the 300 club. I agree with the old man. You’ll bay a lot of hogs with one dog where a second just creates a race.

Thank you sir. 345 is a giant. We killed a barr behind one of my uncles old dogs a couple years back south of Lexington. Boar we killed before him went 287 and the Barr we guessed around 330. He was huge. First time I ever walked up on a hog that big. they are unicorns. Takes lots of feed and years and a hog with the right genetics to break 300

Thomas, I think we’re calling her 7ish these days.  Appreciate it man. Been a long time coming. there’s piles of stories of monsters coming out the navidad bottoms around here all in the 2000s and early 2010s. Don’t figure it would take me this long to get one myself. Hopefully some more to come.

As a far as her losing a step, she has lost some track speed, but she’s at the age now where that brain of hers seems to do her lots of favors. I watched her cut 200 yards off a track after a hog broke bay by drifting the edge of the wood line instead of falling in behind the hog.  Her bad back leg, seems like it’s always getting stronger. I’d say it’s up to 85% these days after that tendon got severed that year.

I got to find me some young dogs ready to start so I can get them going. I HAVE to get some more pups off sketch this coming year. She’s too proven of a producer not to. I’m after 5 like her. When I got 5 kennels with 5 dogs In them that can do what she can. I will be happy.

Man that sounds like a real fun hunt slim! I have also found that 1 solo dog will normally bay up hogs a lot easier than multiple dogs. Really shows you what you’re feeding as well.
