My dog got sprayed and now my tracking collar smells terrible. Any idea how to get the smell out of the collar?

Seriously I have no idea I got sprayed when I was a kid and the tomatoe sause and such does not work! ??? but maybe just the collar you can let sit in some kind of high power cleaner. Someone told me but I never tried it that mean green [mildew remover] works. I would just be careful of whatever you put on it isnt something that will weaken the collar material.

I have heard tomato juice, vinegar, and baking soda/water. As the owner of a dog with a certain hatred for a skunk, I can tell you that I have never had anything take that smell out other than time and use. The smell will seem like it is gone in a week or two, but it will revive when the collar gets wet.

My dog doesn't get on skunks but a couple times a year, but when she does - she does it right. I keep the collar in the direct sunlight, I think it helps.

Ps, welcome to the elite club of skunk hating dogs. There are a lot of exceptional hog dogs out there who every now and then just have a weakness for skunks   rolleyes

talk to the wife

the boss told me: 1 quart 3% peroxide
                        1/4 cup baking soda
                         1 tsp. liquid dawn soap
                        Mix in a bucket (it will fizz)
                       Soak your dogs fur, but be careful not to get any in their eyes.
                       Use a sponge to clean off his head and around his eyes.
                       Knead solution into the fur and be sure to get every part of him with it.
                       Rinse thoroughly. Second batch may be needed. Use fresh ingrediants.

this is the only process that seems to work immediatly. you canthrow them tomatoes and make a salsa cause that is what they are good for.

Close up tooth paste. I had a dog that truly hated hogs, only problem was she hated skunks more. Killed everyone she found.  Close up is about a dollar a tube and worked even better for me that the baking soda solution.  You just add enough water to make it soapy and go to work on the dog and the gear, rinse well, and let dry. Sometimes you might have to wash everything twice but it worked for me. Good luck!

This is exactly what I do and it works but I don't measure it out anymore.  I just eyeball it as I'm dumping it in and it still works. 

Just think of it as free cover scent for your dog.

You beet me to it,  my oldest dog is more skunk killing machine than anything else and hasn't stopped stinking in about 4 years. :D

Our dogs have been sprayed numerous times, becaued they love the taste of skunk. LOL  rolleyes  But the smell usually is gone from the dogs after a couple of days, and as for the collars...the smell fades out after about a week of riding around in the tool box of my husbands truck and being used. Good luck..

my dog hitys a skunk bout every time  either im immune 2 the smell or it just goes away quick but he doesnt smell like 1 4 more than a nite anymore  maybe mamas doin sumthin 4 it  i dunno 

Due to foolishly catching a baby skunk several years ago I got sprayed. Toothpaste worked the best for me.

Kill the skunk ,tye it to the dog real good ,take dog down wind away from the house for about week and make the kids feed the stinking thange.

Ive never seen a skunk down here in S FL luckily, but if we did I believe i'd use a shock collar on them dogs til the batteries were dead.
Ill keep the snakes and gators.

Dirt

I get some real sticky riverbottom clay mud and rub it on the dog or in this case the collar.  Then procede to wash the clay off in the river or a tank the clay will absorb the scent.  I used this in the feild and gets most of the scent off before you even get home.  Dirt also works good to remove oil and grease from yourhands works better than soap and its everywhere.

Break the dogs of skunks? We have trouble with mike trashing on them. One night we all stood there in disbelief while mike went one on one with a skunk armed with nothing more than a short twig. It was like watching a mongoose with a cobra. We have photos of him posing with his trophy.

after you get your dog bathed with the "skunk removal potion" .....take a Bounce or any kind of dryer fabric sheet and rub over your dog's coat.  I do this sometimes whenever i let them in the house and I can't give them a bath right away.  Leaves them smelling "Springtime Fresh"!   ;)
