Title: pray for Bandit
Post by: courtneywidacki on March 25, 2010, 07:54:40 am
We went for what we thought would  be  a short easy hunt yesterday evening. We hunted about twenty min. with lots of sign. We got ontop of the gravel pit when all the dogs (Tank, Bandit, and Okie) took off to the left. Tank continued on about another 200 yards while Okie stopped about a hundred yards in and was bayed solid on a big boar. Bandit joined in seconds after. As we headed that way, Tank came back to the bark and all three had him backed against a tree. Just as the catch dog got let go and was about 8 yards from it the boar decided he was gonna hit the road and just ran straight through Bandit and flung him up in the air. As we began to follow the dogs I ran on the bottom of the pit while the guys headed to the open to run to catch up to the dogs. On my way I noticed Bandit had stopped and his intestines were hanging out. I immediately stopped him and got him picked up and back to the ranger with Daniels help. They guys got the hog and We took him to the vet and were there until eleven at night. It turns out the tusk ppcut aabout a six inch long hole on his stomach close to his back leg. It cut an intestine and ripped all the way and stuck his spine. He was walking after it has happened until I got to him so I hopefull that that wont be an issue. But he went through alot last night and everthing was cleaned out and stitched up nicely, so now all we can do is pray that no kind of infection or interenal problems happend. He will be at the vet for four days and will have to keep a close eye on him for a couple weeks after that. So keep him is your prayers. He is only 13months and has been turning on strong to hunting hogs. He is a fighter and a great companion. Ill keep you updated as the days go on.

Courtney I sure hate to hear that, I hope he has a speedy recovery.  If time allows go visit him at the vet, I think it reminds em what they are fighting for.  Prayers sent!

Thanks matt. I will definately do that. Daniel is going to visit a couple of times a day too. The vet said it will help him heal and keep him reminded that we are there for him. He was looking good last night but only time can tell.
on another note:
It was good hunting with you the other weekend. We will have to do it again.

Court, we are thinking about bandit. That poor dude must have a bullseye on his chest. He's always the one getting banged up.

Let me know if there is anything I can do.

Thanks Richard, I wish there was something we could do to help him heal better, but now its all internal. We just have to wait and see if any infection sets in, he is on heavy antibiotic and the vet is taken good care of him. He said the intestine heals fast (within a couple days) and the cuts wont take long to heal, and keeping it clean wont be hard, just the bacteria that is possibly in there already has to be killed off and hopefully the antibiotics do the trick. They gave him about 75% chance, so we are hopeful. HE is young and healthy so maybe that will help him out some.

We had the same thing happen to one of our best dogs about two months ago and he pulled thru and is doing well again, so they can make it back. Good luck with him

Courtney,
He can't help but be tough and he is in good hands, so all that is left is prayers, sent those too. Keep me posted on his recovery. I am looking forward to seeing pics of the boar that done the damage.

also tell Daniel to let Tiffinay at the vet office know who Bandit sire is, she gets attached to some of the clients and some get extra special treatment while they are there.

Well modern veterinary medicine has come a long way and hopefully those antibiotics are stout enough to keep him under control. I hope he makes a quick and full recovery. Please keep us updated as his condition improves! (staying positive)

Cheers

Courtney,
My heart sank last night when I received the news.  Initially I was just sad for Bandit taking an injury like that so young, but shortly after my concern turned to Sticka Dan, poor kid has his first hog dog fighting for its life at the Vet clinic.  My prayers are going out to both of them, Bandit to make a speedy recovery, and Danny to stay strong regardless of the outcome and know that he has done everything he can for his little buddy.  As tough of a dog as Bandit is, my money says he will be back on his feet soon.

**UPDATE**

I just talked to Courtney and Bandit is sitting up now and drinking water.  Danny went to visit him and his tail started wagging.  Danny was able to walk him and he is pissing.  He is not in the clear yet, but doing better.

Sounds like everyones prayers are helping.

Sorry so long on the update. but he is doing much better. He is drowsy but is sitting up and drinking water on his own which the doc said would happen for a couple days. Daniel went to see him and he said bandit was so excited to see him and his tail was wagging. He took  him for a little walk while he was there and he is peeing normal, walking normal, so all things look good. Hopefully things stay this way. He has about another 12 days until he is in the clear from infection from what the doc says. We cant take him home for anothr three because the want to monitor how much fluid he is taking in.

Here is the boar that did the damage: Needless to say, Daniel was ready to go "battle ax on his ass".  ;D

He doesnt look so big here because we were trying to get a good picture of the teeth. He weighed about 250lbs.

Bandit ( also known as Bandito)  is Daniels first hog dog. He started hog hunting with us not too long ago pretty much full time. He is aarons brother and use to go with us on occasion, but he loved it and he loves seeing his dog do well. He is a proud owner and this has kinda set Daniels spirits back as well seeing as it is his first and only hog dog.  But he is doing well, and I look forward to giving yall a positive update in the upcoming days.

It was a mean boar and im so glad we got hijm out of the woods to but Im almost positive there are more of them bruisers out on tait ranch. (we saw quite a few big ones in previous hunts while dogs were busy on other hogs)

I appreciate it. Its never a good thing and I hope all the dogs are always safe even though that is unrealistic. Thank you for your prayers.

Update: as of today, I went to see Bandit myself and he looks great and is happy and peeing and trotting around, he is definately not hte peppy badit he usually is but he is still stuck at the vet. He has a couple more days to fight off infection before they will let him is our hands. They are going to try feeding him tomorrow, adn I dont doubt he will have any trouble eating. He is looking and acting good. He is not in the clear, but its looking positive. I want to thank all of yall for your comments and prayers. Me, the hunting group, and Bandit greatly appreciate it.

OK, so bandit is doing awesome. The vet says better than normal and that he is really surprised he is doing so well. He has eaten and pooped and looked normal. no sign of infection yet. He is the happy spunky bandit he used to be. So all things look good. He is still on a no exercise plan with specific food for a while, but he is coming home today.  ;D
