EAST TEXAS HOG DOGGERS FORUM

Me, Mike, Chris, Mandi John and Ray met up last night to make a round and pick up pups from Mike. We turned out about 10pm or so and by 1:30 still no hogs so we went over to where we knew some feeders were throwing and not five minutes later we had this guy bayed up. He went to work on the dogs in the thicket and then to a lake were e continued to hand out the arse whoopins. Mike and chris went out into the lake and Mike got a snout rope on the swimming hog and they were able to drown it. My pup who is only about nine months old was able to get in on the action and was givig that hog hell witht the old dogs.  Then the reality of what kind of hog his was sat in as we started assessing the damage to the dogs. Lizzie had a really bad cut about 12" long on her back leg nearly to the bone, neveral other dogs had pretty bad gashes and pokes and then we tracked to Annie and Chris found her with her with a severe thorasic cavity injury. I have never seen a dog in that kind of shape and it was hard to see her in that shape. We feel confident that this is the same hog that is responsible or killing meat head nearly a year ago. Annie passed at the vet and Lizzie had to have a bunch if stitches to get her back together. This hog was rank and knew how to hurt a dog on purpose like no other hog I've seen. Very glad he is gone and I hate that he was able to cause soo much damage in his life. I'll miss you Annie Bell, a dog that will always be missed and all other dogs will be compared to.

Mandi and I were talking on the way home and we realized this is also the same hog that nearly gutted brandy last year, at the same time he got meaty.  Interesting that one of my best memories of Annie and worst occurred with the same hog a year apart.

He was one bad dude, and I gotta admit that I am glad he is out of the woods.

Sorry for the loss of your dog. Glad you got him. Sounds like he was a pretty rank one.

I'm sure glad we got him, but I hate what the dogs went through. This old boar has been around the block before.

O man sorry to hear about your dogs. It's gotta feel good to get the one that got away. Hope the patched up dogs get well.

I sure hated to hear about Annie.  Hope all the others heal quickly.

That's a bit of bad luck for you Matt,...I hate that for you, we all know it can happen but it still gets to you when it does. Glad you finally got a dog killer out of the herd.....hope your dogs heal up fine.....keep us posted.

Very sorry to hear about your dogs. It is ironic that the hogs that take something near to your heart are the same hogs that you remember for a lifetime. That hog is built like a picture perfect stud boar anyone would want from a genetic standpoint. He is built right, and smart enough to test the best dog.

Chris you are right, I know for a fact I have never seen a hog that went for the middle of a dog like this one. The dude had his technique down pat....

Sorry Chris and Mandi for your loss, but nice job killing that sucker.

I keep replaying last nights events in my head..... an epic battle in its most raw form. It seems like time stood still and I can't tell if the entire episode took five minutes or an hour. It's funny how one defines a trophy boar can change after a battle such as this. That hog took the best dog I have ever owned, and one of the best I have had the privelidge of hunting behind.. and in return, I took his life.

As I was driving home today and I could see his head in my rearview mirror, I kept wondering  if it this head was worth the tradeoff of losing Annie .....  I don't guess there is a clear answer, but there is a real satisfaction in knowing that we won this battle, and he is a trophy I will never forget.

If you had asked me last week what I consider a trophy, I would have given a different description than I would today. Last night redefined what a trophy is to me.....

As for losing Annie, she's going to leave a huge hole in my pack that will be hard to fill. I guess its time for my Ruby pup to step up.

Just so everyone knows Annie belonged to Chris and Mandi, I just wrote the story. The only dog I had in the fracus was Cricket, 9 mo old brindle bob tail dog and she came away with nothing more than an education on swimming and barking at the same time. Chris took the receiving end of this train wreck fo sho!!

Chris & Mandi I'm so sorry to hear about your Annie.. I'm glad you took out the one that got her. I hope the other dogs are pulling through alright, it sounds like it was an epic battle.

      i was really sad today when you called about Annie she was truly a special dog to me as well,i shure enjoyed hunting behind her.  im so glad she was able to find hogs for you right to the end, even though she is the last dog you would ever think of getting cut, she had to just be in a bad spot to not be able to get out of the way.  she was a true hog finding machine..  RIP Annie

 i have been thru the same thing trying to define a trophy hog, and it has not always been the bigest one or the one with the most teeth seems like those genetic atheletes stick out in my mind  the hogs that have beaten me so many times..

 i dont have anymore Annie's , she was one of a kind for shure.

chris, mandi, matt, mike, john and ray.......this was unfortunate to lose such a good dog.  and yes a trophy hog does not have to have 4" of teeth or weigh a ton.  this ole boy is not only a trophy but with his size, weight and them 2-2 1/2 teeth is what i call not just a dog killer but a "PACK WRECKER".  chris/mandi sorry for your lose....john told me on the phone she was a great one(RIP ANNIE).....but one thing for sure you guys won the battle and the war and the cut dogs have a valuable lesson and Annie has gone out just like the great ones should...........PURE WAR......sorry for your loss again......JW aka Pigstkr

On another note, great hog.  I can only imaging the gratification of catching a hog that size after he has worked your dogs over.  Sorry about the dogs but good job on finishing it

Chris & Mandi, I am sorry for your loss of Annie as she was one of those dogs that was a pleasure to hunt with, because she was a hound I never expected her to impress me as much as she had. One of those pleasant surprises after hunting for several years and begin to think that you have seen just about every "type", she was her own type, no doubt.

Chris you talk about the "trophy", those events will always run in slow motion every time you think about him, that memory never runs in real time or atleast those ones, don't ever speed up for me.
I am glad you got him out of the woods, Meaty is probly pretty proud of yall too!

what breed was annie? did she have any protection on? Just courious... Sorry to hear about your loss sounds like she was a great dog.

Annie was a plott.  Based so loose that often times the garmin did not show her treed. She was not wearing protection, and the only hole in here was underneath her almost between her back legs. Not a vest in the world that covers that area.

Thanks everyone for the nice words. We are sure going to miss Annie. Last night when I fed the dogs, I almost expected her to bark her usual "feed me" bark. When it didn't happen, it really sunk in that she's gone. She was the best hunting dog ever to grace our pack, and I loved her as much as Chris did.

I almost expect lizzie to get cut because she is given to being a little gritty every now and then. Annie has not ever been cut with us because she bayed from 30 feet back. She had such respect for a hog she just never got close. That's what is really so hard about this is that it just should not have been her. All I can figure is that when the catch dogs got there he bolted and ran her over. There was a grunt, a break, a squawling dog, and then another bay further away.

It is just a bad deal altogether. I have three injured dogs in our only concrete kennel. Water up on top of the platform so they don't have to jump down to get a drink, and mineral oil on their food to ease the process of going potty. I think they will be fine in the long run, but this pack is shut down for a while.

Glad we got that sob. He killed meat head and tried to gut brandy last year. With Annie and all the other dogs he wrecked, I just feel like he needed to be shut down for good. He was a big dog smart boar, and I will sleep better at night knowing he won't get a chance to work over any more dogs.

I am truly sorry for your loss..... I hope that the rest of the pack heals up soon, with no complications. Real nice hog that really cost a lot. Chris the "Trophy Factor" really sucks sometimes brother. Good luck with the rest of the pack.

Tyson took a tusk to the face, a hair below the eye socket. I think he will keep the eye. Also a few cuts around his neck and another along his backstrap.  Not a single poke through his vest...
Ruby ended up with three ugly cuts on her neck, and some separation of the skin along the top of her shoulders. I am guessing the hog got ahold of her back and shook her.

All three of the dogs should heal just fine. It will give me a good excuse to take some time off and finish some more projects around the house.

Chris Im sorry to read about your dog. And any hog that has been doing what that hog has to a pack of dogs is a troph in my books.

heck of a hog guys! sorry for losing the dog and damage he did. H is teeth dont seem to be overly large but those size seem to be the ones that can do the damage. This time a year I really worry more about hogs hitting the water. Thanks for sharing.

Real sorry to hear about losing the dog Chris and Mandi!! It's never easy, especially when they're the leader of the pack.. On the other hand, great hog guys!! Those dog wreckers sure do damage sometimes, it's quite a handful and scary situation when they start getting that big... Awesome TROPHY!

We've had a dog killed, two dogs gutted, one punctured lung, and numerous pokes and cuts over the last 3 months and in every single situtation it went down just as you described.  The cover is just too thick for the dogs to get out of the way when the hogs breaks to them.   

Real sorry to hear about Annie and rest of the pack.  :'(  I completely believe in the concept that some hogs are true dog killers.  How they get that way I don't know, but there are some out there that know how to carve a dog up too good for it to be random chance.  Did this hog show any signs of being dogged before?

hate to hear about ANNIE (RIP) but Im glad yall got him.....It always a good feeling when u get a bad one, especially when u have encountered him before and have a history with him( makes him a trophy for sure)......he aint getting away this time....NICE JOB

Nice hog guys and gals!!! But I am truly sorry for your loss.  Annie was a go getter and one that will be nearly impossible to reaplace.  But at least you got some good bloodlines around you to give it a shot!
