Title: 9/22/10 hunt
Post by: jhy on September 25, 2010, 04:59:41 pm
Finally finished a project that I have been tied up with and my GARMIN came back in as well, so I took a couple of friends out with the full moon and turned the dogs out.  Didnt take long to strike some but the race went on for 3.5 hours until I had enough and was ready to get home, so I cut the dogs off and headed towards the truck.  Well we didnt get far and they rigged one and bailed out and got it bayed about 150 yards out so I turned my bird/bull cross Gus, 10 month old dog, loose and next thing I know it was his first solo catch in the woods and a decent boar at that.  Let my buddy Brandon stick his first hog, which he named after his soon to be ex-wife, and we got out and started towards the truck again.  We no more than go a 1/4 mile and there is another hog crossing the field so we dropped the dogs and got it bayed about 50 yards down in the bayou. Sent Gus in and he wasnt as quick to hit this one as the last one, but it had been shot in the back end and wasnt moving too well, so I snuck in and snatched up the tail and we got it stuck.  By the time we knew what was going on we had split bays and then they fell silent and my heart sank as I watched the dogs get out over .62 miles before they bayed again.  We got within 250yds of a solid bay but the pup just wasnt sure about going to it in that thicket or if he should.  I dont know, but he better get it figured out pretty quick.  I called the dogs out, which wasnt hard considering they had been at for over 8 hours and I was home by daylight. Both Boars were 125-150lbs estimated weight.

Yeah, they have been calling to go.  Unfortunately, deer season starts Friday morning so we will be down for a while until folks get tired of hunting.

I got two bird x pitbull crosses and a dogo x parker cur.  So far the parker x dogo and the male bird x pitbull have caught on hogs in the woods.  When we get our first freeze I am going to run the trio as a death squad on some smaller tracts that are in town to shut down the runners.  They are all about the same age and all have a lot of natural hunting drive.
