Title: Florida Hunt
Post by: chainrated on December 09, 2010, 10:01:59 am
Me and 2 buddies of mine Shawn and jeremy made a trip to Florida. I haven't been able to hunt much lately so I had a real good time and we lucked up and caught a few hogs, 10 total, 3 were pretty good boar hogs..
Rain , Brinks and HT bayed this one first.

Then Rain and Curly got this one talked into standing still for a minute.

Brinks solo bayed 2 sows  and was bayed about an hour before we got to him. And I couldn't believe it but the dogs caught both of them side beside instead of all piling on one and the other one getting away. But then we forgot to take the pic before turning one of them loose..

The one we turned loose before taking a pic

Then they relayed and ended up baying another pretty good boar hog

We got on 2 other good hogs but they cut the dogs up and got away. Tiny and Bud had one caught for a long time but when we got there they were both cut down and whooped, that one got the best of this time.. This was Tiny's first hunt after raising some pups for 4 months. I was hoping she would take it easy but it didn't happen..

The black and white dog is Shawn's dog, he is always trying different crosses .. He's 3/4 birddog  1/4 Trigg.. He's doin pretty good for a young dog , he absolutely loves a hog and can fly... He has all the tools and if he ever figures it all out he's gonna be something..

Yeah it was a management area. There were truck loads of people with hound dogs running around all over the place trying to shoot hogs. Only saw one dead hog the whole time though lol..

Good hunt Chain!!!  That's some rough lookin' stuff yall were in, I've never been in anything like it myself.   Must be some of that tidal stuff on the gulf coast I've heard about?

Also brings me to a question I've been meanin' ta ask you... I know you like your dogs rough, but with rough dog with as much bottom as yours seem to have, how do you keep them healthy??

I can only imagine what yall went through tryin' to get to your dogs based on them pictures!  :o

Like you said, when I pair rough with rangy.. I usually end up with cut down/whooped dogs at the end of a long march with no hog to show for it  rolleyes ;D

Well to answer your first question, You Don't, The rough ones stay banged up a lot. A perfect example is One of the hogs that got away from us on this trip.. Tiny and my buddies dog Bud trailed a good one off and jumped him about 500 yards from us but he went straight away from us until we lost them on the garmin and the only way to get there was to go way around and then walk about 3/4 of a mile. We picked them back up when we got within 1/2 a mile of them and it showed them treed but we were still a good 20 - 30 minutes from getting to them, and well you know the rest. We got there and both dogs were cut down and exhausted and the hog was gone. Tiny still can't walk.
We try our best to get to them as quick as we can but sometimes it's just impossible to stay on top of them.. We also try to pair them up in a way that they will stand back and bay if it's a big hog. One thing though that throws our dogs off in FL is that some of the 150lb little boar hogs will have 2 inch teeth and the dogs don't take that into consideration , they just see a 150 lb hog and say hey we can take him lol..
I do like rough dogs and will always have some, this line throws some in just about every litter but we also get some straight BAY dogs and I like them too just as much.. Different people like different types of dogs but when it comes down to it whether rough or loose some dogs just consistently produce hogs and some don't , There is no ONE thing that makes them like that , Except WANT TO..
