I'm training my dog to use her nose by dragging Hot Dogs and Bacon around the woods ( I heard that's the best way). I found a company that sells Wild Hog scent for training. If I were to use the scent  how should I reward the dog. I would prefer to use a live hog but  I can't keep a hog for more than a day (when i buy one I just let it go the same day). I've been working her on the Hot Dogs for a couple of days and she can already find one from about 100-125yrds away. Any tips, tricks or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm picking up a hog this weekend and taking her out to the woods. I was planning on putting it in a cage and placing it in the woods. I know she can find a hot dog. I guess we'll see if she can find a hog.

Why  can’t you keep a hog ,believe it or not you can put a dog color on a pig and  chain it !!! Works good for training pups . You can even teach a pig to lead for tracking training !!! This is how I start my pups.HUNT’UM UP!!!!

I don't have any where to keep it. I have a small yard and when i go work my dog i take her to my lease that is a couple hours away.

Jus keep workin with her she will learn what you are asking! Let her work the pig some before you make her find it!

You could tie a rope on it an put a drag on it so he can't get completely away but but down a good trail

She's been in the pen once... I posted a story about that a couple of weeks ago. The hog found a way out and she was on it immediately. Caught it a few times, let it go and would catch it again. Should I tie the back legs and let the hog make it's own trail? She's got a nose on her, just not sure if she'll know to follow the trail.

Do you have a dog that will already pick up a trail and run it out? that'd be a good way to get her to know what she's supposed to be finding. We've drug a hobbled hog around then just hobbled the back 2 legs together then black tape aroun the hobbles on the legs so it ain't as easy to slip hobbles and tie off to a tree so hog can move pretty freely. Here lately I've cross hobbled one so it could still get to it's feet and let it take out for a while then cut pups loose that's worked pretty well. Could also tie 1 front leg up and make it a so called 3 legged pig and let loose. Just some things we've tried and has seemed to work pretty good just depends on how hard you feel like working I guess. Just my input.

Unfortunately I don't have a dog that will run a trail. If I've got any takers I'd love to run her sometime in the future with an experienced dog. If anyone would like to help a rookie out PM or call me.

I would also teach the dog to wind the hog. Stage the pig upwind about 1 hundred yards from where you will be driving the dog. Make sure you know exactly where the scent is crossing the road and then drive slowly thru that spot and watch the dog. If the dog wants to go to the hog turn the dog loose and sic the dog on the scent and let it go bay. If the dog doesn't know what to do encourage the dog and turn the dog loose and run toward the hog and the dog should go ahead of you and bay. I am assuming that the dog will go to the hog since you have said the dog wants to bay a hog. After this you can turn the pig loose with a rope tied to a rear leg with some type of anchor and give the hog a decent head start and then turn the dog loose on the track and encourage the dog to trail. You can help the dog find the hog if needed. Praise the dog for a job well done. 2 or 3 times of this and the dog should be ready for the woods if it has got the hunt in it.

Cut up a pig skin and give it as treats. Then take a piece and drag it a short distance and hide it. Make the dog find the treats.

may sound weird but i have been putting dog harness that i get at walmart on piglets then tieing a 300 yard rope to the pig and the other side to a tree let the pig down on the ground and away it goes, im working my dog that way, that way my scent isnt out there and i know the dogs not just following me,

they say you can tie a 2x4 board about 2 or 3 feet long to the hogs back leg with about a 10 foot rope and turn it loose and it cant go but so far and hang up ,just thought i would share

We use the same system with the dog harness or use a cage that you can hide in the brush. Use some scent killer on your boots and lay you a drag trail with a live pig. Start short and work your way out as you go. Hide the pig either utilizing the harness or cage and circle back a different way than you came in. When you turn your pup loose walk slowly in the direction of the drag. If your pup comes off track wait until the pup gets through swinging or playing and slowly continue on track. If you need to hiss em a few time to get their attention back to the track. If the pups doesnt take up the track then you finally get into the immediate area of the pig and stand still until the pup stumbles up on the pig. Then do it all over again. The better the pup gets the more difficult the drag needs to be including into water and across fallin logs. You do it right you will have a six month old pup that can find his own hog when he hits the big woods. Tried and true method when starting em young and you can finish you one out by year and half old if you got some good blood that is all buisness. Never had much luck with the drag scent unless you use it with little bitty pups in your yard.            Also where did that good lookin Yeller on your profile come from?
