If you are planning to keep it long term, and not worried about resale, just call the local Sheriff's office and have them run the vin# before you hand over the cash. They can confirm if it's been reported or not. I have been checked on two different occasions by DPS. Once in Seguin, and once in Pearsall. I've had 5 or 6 before that with no issue, and I agree with what's previously posted, ck the VIN. Other than that just be sure to get a good bill of sale and that will cover you.

DPS held me over for a while one night because I didn't have my title with me and we finally found the ID # on the frame and he called it in and cleared me. He said they checked periodically becaus of so many that are stolen. I had one stolen so I am glad they are checking.
