I ask this question becuase I think most people have bought and sold at least one dog before.  If I were a betting man, I would bet that most people (99% or so) will not sell thier "best dog".  I know that I would not....at least I say that but, I guess for the right price I would sell my best dog.  So I started wondering, what is my price?  What would I sell my best dog for???  I am not sure.  So, my question is....

1) How much would it take to buy your best dog?

2) How much are you willing to pay for a dog that you consider to be a perfect or close to perfect dog?

I know what my dogs are worth to me, but that doesn't mean that I would pay someone else that much..just becuase I dont have that much money.  I guess my buying and selling range is beteen $200 and $500.  I am sure htere are dogs out there that are worth $2500 or so, but I cannot afford to pay that for a dog.  What are you willing to pay???  I know that this post will get a lot of replies and I look forward to hearing what eveybody says.  There are a lot of opinions out there....

I would not sell my best dog hell he aint that great,lol. But i wont pay more than 300 to 500 because a hunting dog can get killed at any time, and its hard for me to just throw money away. just my opin

i wouldn't sell none of my finished dogs i know wut i got their last breath will be in the woods or in kennal,and I raise all mine so dont plan on buyn any  ;D

Dogs only worth what someone is willing to pay. I got offered 1900 for a gyp I used to have. I turned it down. 5 years of blood swet and tears was worth way more thamn 1900I to me. She got killed 4 months later by a hog. I still don't regret not letting her go. My dogs aren't that good any more but I still don't think ill sale em for any amount.

No one would want to pay for one of my CD's  just cuz they are a dime a dozen but of my three only one has no manners the others are pretty well natured and mind good. My Strike dog I couldn't sale even if I had to. He's not 2 yrs old yet and has come along way in the year I have had him. Can't remember the last time he trashed. Ran thru a heard of deer and bayed up a couple hogs. He really ain't no super dog but if they are out there with in the mile he's gonna find them. Just an early starter and quick finisher I couldn't ask for more but I don't think $3,000 could touch him. Hard to let go of dogs you raise and train if they turn out like you like.

I have a hard time thinkin' I'd give $1,000 for a "finished" dog. Just solely on the idea that someone else trained the dog to their "liking" that I may not like what he does. I don't like a dog to make a peep until lookin' at a hog so If i'm lookin' at a "finished" dog that my yip if hog breaks. The dog may be worth $1,000 and consistant hog finding and catching machine but I'd have a hard time to give $1k for a dog that has a super minor flaw. I'd rather just pick them up and raise them and train them myself. A lot more satisfaction when a dog you train does well and in my opinion is priceless.

Hey if I found a dog that could consistently produce hogs I would pay a lot for it,assuming it was healthy and not real old. A lot bein maybe 2000. I would not sell my best dogs. If you raise a dog for 2 or 3 years, work with it , care for it you'll never get yur money back anyways. What's your time worth ? A dog I wouldn't sell I may give to a friend ? Somehow the monetary figure messes things up ! Dogs are hard to come by here so a good one is worth a lot whether you make that dog or get to purchase it.

ive sold some for 1000 just a few they were plotts and went to far. but if a mans family needs the the money then sell them for as much as u can family comes first.dont misrepresent them. i would pay dearly for a cur that would hunt like a plott. so what is a dog worth kinda like horse. thats why banks wont take them as colladeral."its whats the buyer is willing to pay, and the seller thinks the value is"?never ends.

Ive had 2 finished dogs that i git that way.  Both were FREE.  Got them from people i know that got out.  Ive lost all my places to run dogs and still have one finished yella fl cur that wont leave my yard for any amount.  If I HAD to get rid of him hes go to a friend for what i paid for him.

Bullet72....the gyp that I have (the one I would not sell) it a 6 year old registered catahoula.  Dead silent, wont bark until looking.  She was raised and trained next to another plott gyp that I had.  She still hunts with plotts.  When I turn my plotts loose, she is with them every step of the way and never opens.  The good thing about her is she rolls over quickly and she will not bay the same hog twice.  She knows when a hog is caught and turned back lose, she better not bay that hog again.  When I tunr her out,  I just wait.  Watch the gps...she will show up bayed or come right back in jump in the back of the ranger.

I'd like to think that I would not sell her, I've raised her from 3 months, but I just never know.

Such a tough topic.... i can honestly say that no amount of money could buy one of my dogs. I've worked way too hard to let them go like that.  Especially since its harder and harder to find a good dog these days. If i was to buy a dog, i would probably stay around the 200-400$ range and i would want it to be a younger dog that hasnt picked up any bad habits yet. Its hard to spend alot of money when you never know what can happen to them.  I've got one dog that is  really something special. I cant remember who it was on here, but i remembered their quote, "You only get one or two crackers a lifetime"... and i have been lucky enough to already get one.  Love my dogs and i love hunting with them. They are my best friends.

only dog i had that was near finished (produce atleast a hog a hunt if not more) and sold him for $800. prolly wouldnt go higher than that, wouldnt pay more than that

I just wondering how people say catch dogs are a dime a dozen ? I find it hard to find one that is trash broke gets along with all dogs listens good an knows what his job is an that you can trust to not turn loose , I mist not know where to find alot like that , because I know mine I anit sellin for no price

An strike dogs , it takes alot of work an time to get a dog that will constantly find hogs an not trash , so it's all what your time is worth ,

I made the mistake of selling my favorite dog a while back. He may not have been the best dog, but he was my favorite and I loved hunting him. I was sick about it! I got his little blue arse back and I will never do that again! I would never buy a finished dog simply because I dont want to spend that kind of money. but I would spend 4-500 on a real good bred well started dog that I liked. Its cheaper than buying a pup, and raising to that point. I have been real lucky and been given a couple real nice young dogs by some good guys (purebreedcolt...Spivey). If for whatever stupid reason i got out of hog hunting for good....I would try to give my dogs to someone to pay it forward. but the little blue dog will die with me....

I raised a pup up until he was about 7 months old and kinda quit hunting for awhile.. so i gave him to a buddy of mine who sent him to some fellas in Miss. Last ive heard was he was one hell of a stricke dog and the guy said 5,000 wouldnt touch him but ive never seen the dog hunt and im pretty sure there hasnt been a man standing in front of him with 5k lol and thats just hear say.. I think its just a matter of you likeing the dog and how much your willing to spend on that dog. Some ppl have more money to spend than others too... JMO

IDK... when I have it $$$, I'd put it down!  ;D If there is a dog that I've hunted behind that I like, or for that matter haven't hunted behind that my group likes, I will try and nab it! BUT of course, the free hand-me-downs are much better.  ;D They most always come with a, "if you don't like the dog, then I would like him back please", and that will give you some type of security in knowing that you will not be stuck out if the dog isn't what you are looking for. I've paid a grand for a dog, but he pricless to me, and I would let the previous owner hunt with us, with him, anytime they want. But i've also paid 550 for two dogs, and sold one for 280 after a little less than a year of working em, and the dog ended up being a guys lead strike dog. He said a guy offered him a grand for him, and he turned em down. I really think that if a dog has IT, whether they are a $1000 or $100 dollars, that if you put that dog on hogs consistantly, they will turn out to have a place somewhere in your pack. They may not turn out to be your lead stike dog, but those kind of dogs aren't a dime a dozen. JMO

I don't consider many dogs finished.  The couple I do consider finished are priceless and if sold would command a high price.  I don't think I would sell any of my dogs, heck most people wouldn't wanna buy my junk anyways. 

I have seen a finished dog bring 3500 and 5000 on a few occasions.  From what I hear though, that's chump change when you get to talking coon dogs and rabbit dogs.  There is quite a few people out there with more money than sense.

if u take the price of raising pups or culling crappy dogs.i think a person could pay 400 500 for well started 1.5or 2 year old. try em out a few times. around 1000 to 2000 would be high limit on a older dog3 to 4 years.that had the qualitys u like.notice id didnt say finished dog. i dont think their is such thing. money makes the evil come out in some people and that is sad...... o ya i still have the gyp she is getting old and slow waiting on a heat. affraid i may waited to long to breed her.pricing a dog like her i quess 2000 but i dont need the money so she can die here of old age.  smarlowe do i know u ? this is good post keep it coming i thinks dogs should priced on hogs caught. be funner to talk about

There are a lot of varriables that go into this dog buyng and selling stuff.  I would say (for the most part) the guys and gals on this site share very similar interest and similar experiences.  Thier are a lot of other people out there, that dont spend much time on the internet or have different interest than what we (internet guys) do.  For example ( and these are just my examples)....

Example 1) I know several guys that hunt "old style" cur dogs and they have had the same lines for many many years.  For the most part, they dont sell thier stuff and they dont buy outside thier stuff either.  But if they do sell a dog, it is going to be a very good dog and I'm sure you wont get one for less than $1500 and $3500-$4000 may get you a chance at thier best dog.  In this example, these guys have no experience with buying a dog on the internet and $400-$500 is chump change.

Example 2) I know of a couple of bear hunters in another country that come to the US to buys hog dogs (plotts) to use as bear dogs.  The guys overseas may pay $5,000 for a finished dog or $5,000 for a liter of pups off a proven dog.

To sum it up, I guess what someone pays for a dog is dependent on their wants, needs, thier amout of available money, and thier passion for thier own dogs.

Ive bought my far share of dogs and most of them on word alone , which was  big mistake  but ive also ended up with some pretty good ones. Finally ended up with a decent strike dog i paid 650$  turned down 1500$ for him recently ,I look at it like this  do i want 2 drive around  hunting with no chance or drive around knowing if i get in fresh sighn  its on!!  I like catching swine! So no i wouldnt sell mine for any amount there 2 hard 2 come by.Anyways once u spent the money u would b sick!!!!

   In 2007 I had some pups for sale, but everyone that call always asked "Got any finished dogs?" So in one of my conversations when asked the same question I popped off " Yes, but probably won't like the price". At the time I had probably 4 good dogs and several more that were good enough. Told this guy about a gyp, he drove from somewhere around the Conroe area, gave me $1200 for her and drove home. I sold her with a guarantee and trail of 30 days. He called me back in 7 days told me to spend the money. One of the neatest transactions I had, but I had nothing to hide. The gyp was everything I represented her to be.

i've done this a couple times had some one ask me how much for one of my dogs that i really didn;t want to sell . so i pop off a what i thought was way to high a figure and long story short had to say goodbye to my dog . the price of anything is what an individual is willing to pay . heard the other day that a penny went for several million dollars  :o

My best dog I gave 75 bucks for him as a pup. And he is 4 now and would not sell him for anything. I got offered 3 pretty descent dogs plus 500 for him and turned it down. I like him to much and its only money. And rest of my dogs were free

The entire reason I started this post was becuase I had something like what you described happen to me...except I said no, nothing else for sale.  If I would have said yes and ended up selling the dog (she is kinds like my best friend), I would have felt like I sold my soul.  If I would have sold her, I would probably be here now thinking about all the times she found hogs or all the times I had to sew her up. 

my dogs aint much but the 1 thing for sure is they find hogs and they are truly my best friends especially my male and a female that a good friend of mine gave me. them to dogs will stay with me till they die. i have hunted many a day and night with these dogs and they have made me so happy, and pissed me off bad also, and i dont want them going to anybody that wouldnt appreciate them as much as me so there for that will never leave my yard. i would also never pay for a dog because i am old school in my thoughts that i know 1 or 2 people that i could get good blood from and wouldnt charge me a cent and if my dogs ever become breed worthy they would get dogs from my litter free also. the rest would be culled. to me its a passion not a business, i know that it cost tons of money to hunt and raise dogs but i knew that before i got in to this and will quit hunting the day that i cant afford it without having to buy and sell dogs. now thats just my opinion, sorry it wasnt directed to anybody else. also, i take pride that the people who i hunt with would give me a dog and out of respect i would never..ever let that blood leave my yard cause they dont share with many...

I gave 1000 dollars for a bmc [ loftin bred dog ] and had hunted with this dog with craig for about year , seen it run down and catch a deer once , I bought another for 500 , I also bought 2 pups both mixed blood for 50 and have ran them behind the to older dogs and there turning out super , done some breeding and now have to many but luv them to much to sell catch dogs and all I think we will all retire together

Money does not make you happy. Some of the most misserable people I have met have been poor and some rich. The happiest people have been poor and some rich. Well my dogs make me happy so if they aren't for sale then they aren't for sale. If someone stole a dog not for sale they better hope I never catch them. I like my dogs better than people. So if a dog can make me happy you can keep your money. I guess if I got in a real bind of life and death maybe but I doubt it. My wife does not like my dogs but there is a reason she has never told me to get rid of them. Now would sell some dog? Yes. But I would never call it mine. I have one that I would sell but I don't like him. The point is that you can throw as much money as you want and if a dog ain't for sell the dog ain't for sell. Some dogs I may not want to sell and if you ask I would say $100,000. But I do have couple not for sale ever.
