Title: Strike Dog or Catch Dog?
Post by: JRyanS on October 02, 2012, 07:03:24 pm
A lot of people on here brag more about their Catch Dog than their Strike Dogs which is fine, either way it's your opinion and perception but it had me thinking, What are you prouder of, your strike or catch dog?

I'll start, I feel a strike dog holds more bragging rights do to the amount of training and the job they do. With that being said I'm thankful for what a CD does.

Do the catchdogs really get more "love"? All you have to do is figure out how much someone would pay for a well bred cd prospect vs what they'll pay for a well bred strike dog prospect. Or for that matter a finished dog of each vocation...now, I ask you...which dog gets more "love"?

I agree but you see a lot more posted pictures and stories on CD's.

Try hunting with out a find dog its pretty easy no hogs no need for a catch dog.

I got a 12 ga that catches harder than any catch dog I have ever seen.

Dont get me wrong I love a great catch dog but I can live without one and have just as much fun and with a full belly .

Lol I agree. With everyone. Jimmy I use to run only a bunch of catch dogs. Them runners down in south east Tex were a son of a gun

I have had some pretty good strike dogs that could hunt with any dog and then I had one that was born a star and made it look easy...I have not ever had another like him...it would have taken a lot of money to get that dog...

catch dogs...I can buy a good one for 3 hundred dollars...400 dollars for one that I really like...

My cds get 10 times the love my bay dogs do.  A good cd can do it all imo so who needs baydogs lol.  Kinda poking fun at thd.  Ill be honest I like my cds a lot more they are the ones that put pork in my hands strike dogs just find them.  I don't bay and shoot so with out a cd I don't catch hogs.

The catch dog get all my love cause the hogs in south Texas run and
there not a strike dog or a bay dog can hold them
We can just go to the feeders and turn catch dogs out and get one

The catchdog is the one who can get you severely hurt, and in my opinion the dog who should have your trust the most.

I'll also say this (especially to all those who think good catchdogs are a dime a dozen)....I'm not sure why this is because I've never in my life sold a finished catchdog (almost did once...but a different story) and I've sold perhaps only 1 or 2 cur dogs however I get calls, text messages and emails weekly from people looking to buy dogs or wanting to know if I'm aware of anything decent someone might have for sale.  I'd say a good 90% of them are looking for catchdogs.

Concerning catchdogs, I've also personally raised about 6 or 7 (from pups...and different breeds) over the past few years and although I think I have a decent prospect right now not a single one of the others made the cut.  Then again, maybe it's all about people's definition of what is good.  I tend to be pretty harsh and call them like I see them.

I can't agree more Bryant. I believe I spend more time with my catch dog than my strike dogs anyway.  The catch dog is always on the bike with me or is at my side unless I turn him loose then at that point I trust he'll get the job done with all my heart never a hesitation. Once the hog is taken care of, its back to the bike or on a lead at my side.
Don't get me wrong I like my strike dogs too but trust my life to my catch dogs.
Just my opinion and I'm sure some won't agree.

I prefer a help dog. It keeps me company while I'm walkin through the woods.

My catchdog gets all the sugars he want, I've seen what he can do to a hogs hide and I don't want him doing that to me.  :D

As far as who do I value more? That's way easy. An actual good hog dog is relatively hard to come by, whereas I can get about any pit to catch a hog long enough to talk the curs into jumping in and helping. Some people act like getting a pit to catch is a rare deal, when in my opinion getting one that meets certain standards is the hard deal, just talking one into catchin has always been fairly simple. Maybe it's a regional thing though. My old neighbors raised those real overweight short legged blue dogs and we never had trouble getting one of them to bite and hold, not saying they would make a woods catchdog, but in a pinch You could make do with one of them fatties, given you've got curs and a human who will be on his tail.

I would have to say that the only dog at my house a bucket of money wouldn't buy is my brindle bulldog. I think catch dogs get more love for a few reason from me. The main reason is that I have noticed over the years is it's hard to get a good finding dog that has been babied and rubbed to death his whole life. Bc most of the time you end up with a dog that don't wanna leave your feet. There is always exceptions but for me when my baydogs or what some call strike dogs are pups they get love so I can establish a handle after that their but ain't getting out of the pen unless they are going hunting. Where my bulldog will ride to town or sleep in the house. That being said I have a stronger bond with my catchdogs.A true catch dog is just as hard to replace as a good strike dog.

I would say I value them the same , we dont shoot a hog unless theres a big problem , thats only happened twice on over 500 hogs , they are all a team , my bulldog caught a 380 solo that was # 4 in the wwt , very proud of him , no quit , all heart , lays his head on my shoulder on the atv , to me hes the best Ive seen , all my bay dogs can find there own hogs , they have all spent time in the house healing up and all of them have been curled up in my chair with me getting all the luv I can give , I have a favorite bay dog but there all a team and all have a part in the way we hunt and  we charish them all the same , as for worth we all know how easy it is to get a bull dog [ cheap ] but for that bulldog to be one in a million thats not easy , wouldnt take less than 3000 for mine so I guess Ill  keep him till he passes , my bay dogs no less than 4000  a piece ,  who wants to pay that kind of money , not to many people would so again I look at them as the same for what part they do at there job  JMO

x2 on this one Bob! I was waiting on someone to say that. I look at it like a team as well. Some may be able to shoot bayed up hogs, but if you want to catch them you need one to find and one to catch. That being said they are a team. Yes you can use more than one dog, and that's not what I'm saying. I'm just saying that I think if you have good dogs (CD and SD) then they make a complete team, and if you've ever tried to catch hogs without that complete team you'd know what I'm talking about. It's not something that can just be thrown together. Good post!

I agree that you cant catch pigs without one or the other, and every dog will get a certain degree of "love" when they are working and producing income and paying their way for the most part in the kennel... but i agree that my catch dogs get all the love i can give them because ive had them in the house since they were pups and they still hop up in the bed to snuggle up in the winter so thats just me and ive always asked myself the same question of why they get more love but then when it comes to selling or buying, baydogs are signficantly more so im enjoying hearing all the differnt opinions

I value them the same, because they are the same.  I expect my find dogs to catch.  Less moving parts the better.  ;)
