EAST TEXAS HOG DOGGERS FORUM

This was one of the best and worst weekends we have had hunting in a while. Cward, Van Dorn, Jason Thompson & I were entered in the Caldwell tournament. We caught 13 hogs total in a little over a day of hunting. 7 of the hogs had big time teeth and they wrecked just about everything in the trailers. Marshall mims, t-bob, kelly and chances kids Rowdy and Cattle were all helpers to assist in getting the hogs out.

We went up and hunted north of Buffalo in cattle country since Barr hogs arnt allowed. In 5 years of hunting up there and 20-30 hunts we've never caught any barrowed hogs. We get set and chance drops Ike. We put Briar and Ruby down and Jason puts fuzzy with them. We hunt through 2 big mottes of woods and have just about decided to pick up and go to another spot as its getting dark. All of the sudden a boar hog about 175 breaks out of the pasture and heads through some thinned brush. Drake, Fuzzy and ruby roll with him. 500 yards later we have a solid bay. Send the bulldog in and a solid 275 black monster blows out of a briar thicket. Bays again 150 yards later only to meet the bulldog in a head on crash. From there the race was on. 1/2 mile later chance catches up to them caught in a creek.  Get him out and it's a 275# Barr hog. He just about cut Redman, my bulldogs pecker off and split him all down the back leg. We take briar, drake and ruby back around to where the boar hog was and the dogs leave out. Meanwhile Ike had rolled off the first hog and was bayed back towards the incoming race. Pretty soon they were all together hammering on a bad to the bone spotted hog. It was damn near dark and you could still see the ivory this guy was slinging. The son of gun was lightning quick and was very athletic. We got go pro video and some video on my phone I'll upload.  He broke and went a 100 yards or so and settled in a creek. We sent redman and the war was on. We got him caught an tied and to our surprise it was another freaking Barr hog about 240#'s. We get him drug up out if the creek and loaded up. Start looking for the dogs and they are bayed 500 yards to the north. Well big E and Kelly had walked the dogs down a fence row after leaving that hog and everything was gone hunting when Drake bayed a few hundred yards from them. Pretty soon everything got there and was hammering. Big e crawled in the briar thicket and Obama had a stud caught, tied him and it's another Barr. This one weighed conservatively at 325#'s. we all get around to the last hog and it's dark now. We notice a yellow dog was dragging guts, we run over and find out my Drake dog has been gutted. For an hour we laid there and kept water on the intestines and slowly worked them back in. There was a pin hole bust in the large Intestines which had to be stitched shut in order to keep stomach acid and septic fluids from leaking into his body. After going into shock about 5 times, each time bringing him out by just continuously talking to him we got him loaded up in a truck and rushed to Jason's kitchen table where with a needle and sewing thread; chance is able to put a stitch in the pin hole. We push everything back in and then chance goes to sewing his belly liner, and finally we staple everything back in place. As of now, drake is still alive but these next 2 days are critical. He will either make it or not. I can't thank Chance enough for everything he did.  Really he did everything and anything possible. I am very grateful!  For 2 hours he held his fingers in the hole until we were able to finally get him out & sewed back together. Midnight we finally lay it down. We just had one of our best personal hunts ever, and here we are all feeling disappointed because our hogs are "illegal". Down one very good bulldog and a damn solid 4 year old cur dog.

Saturday it's on. We have to make it happen as we don't have anything in the trailer. Mikey bays a small sow not long into the morning hunt on a nest and we catch 2 pigs as well. Boogie and Joe roll off and are running one a long ways off. Before you know it they run this big hog right back by us and we send a bunch of young dogs with them. Up on a youpon hill about 400 yards away everything sets down as pretty as ever. We get in there and they got a big boar hog bayed. I videoed him some, about time the bulldog was almost there, boogie caught the boar and it was on. We got him flipped and stuck. Guessing he was about 275. Not long after that we had 2 more sows and a shoat caught. It was noon and not much was going on. Chance put Mator down. She trailed in .8 of a mile and bayed. Chance sent Captain to her where I got to watch some nice cur dog stock work a hog and settle him. Bulldogs finally got there and we caught another nice boar around 215. Captain took a bad hit to the shoulder but we finally got it under control and stopped. That was it for that place. We covered it high and dry with no more hogs. Picked up and moved to a new spot right at dark. Goose bayed a helluva mean boar hog around 220. Dogs rolled off immediately and bayed again 600 yards out. We got there to see one of the meanest hogs We've caught in a while. He was straight wrecking $hit. Obama got hit right near his heart. We had hell getting it stopped and finally did after he lost a lot of blood. Goose got it good too. This weekend was the worse weekend Ive ever experienced in getting dogs wrecked. We caught 7 hogs with trophy size teeth, 3 sows, 1 shoat and 2 pigs

This was a bittersweet weekend. We weighed in 846#'s on 5 gutted hogs in the Caldwell Boars of Texas. We hunted the caldwell tourney this year because we once again decided to hunt the trail of tears.  This experience has made me realize that I'm pretty much done tournament hunting.  Even though I'm currently in 2nd in the trail of tears with the rest of my teammates. I will now be dropping out of the competition. I can no longer support something I so vehemently disagree with. It's not really a measure of "THE BEST"

It's sad that with the society we live in now, there is that "everyone is a winner attitude" that this generation of people have grown up with; people now feel like in order to make the playing fields even they  have to exclude certain hogs, even though our dogs & anyone elses have no way of knowing what they are doing. They are simply out there doing their job. Baying hogs. Cward and Van dorn have been barring hogs for 15-20 years. There was never any thought to barring hogs for competitions. It's just the way they were brought up, as well as I. For people to say we fill our spots with trophy hogs for tournaments; they are complete f'ing Idiots!! I could go on for hours with this argument and defending our integrity...  but finally you just have to realize you can't argue with stupid

sounds like one heck of hunt guys! sucks not being able to weigh in them barrs cause they are just as rank and run just as hard or harder then any other boar hog out there! Hope them dogs heal up quick fellas!

I hope the folks that are " anti barr" catch a trailer load of em and cant enter them. I have never hunted a tournament and prob never will if they dont allow barrs bc u never know when u will get one.

Heck of a hunt Tony!  Hope all the dogs heal up quick.  It's  a sad day when monster hogs like that can't be counted in a tournament.  How the heck is the dog supposed to know the difference.  It's a a shame.

That's great dogs doing their job. Sorry to hear they got wrecked on hogs that did'nt count but should have. Only the Best need apply my right butt cheek. Just goes to show that there are Barrs where you least expect them! Who won first place ?

Dogs sounded like they worked and fought hard, so piss on everything else man especially the rules hardly anyone agrees on (look at the polls  :o)  I hope the dogs heal fine man.

That is ridiculous. Good weekend fellas, hope them dogs heal up. But that'd be the end of tournament hunting for me. Man gets out there and him and his dogs work their asses off and can't turn in some fine Barr hogs. Crying shame I tell ya. Pathetic

Hell of a haul fellas, I hate all the dogs got tore up.  Should of sold the barrs to pay the vet bill and said to heck with the tournament.

I never really cared either way on the barr competition situation but stated I thought they should be allowed in contests. Reading something like this makes me understand it is a BS rule. Maybe this will be an eye opening experience for some. I would feel the same as you if I were in this situation.

The weekend was a great hunt one we will never forget. I probably came off rude today to alot of people at the weigh in we to tell you the truth I meant to I guess hunting dogs is part of my freedom in this great country but I realized I lost part of my right by the competion removing barrs. I sent in last week a 3 year membership to tdha I personally feel as we have been separated but i hope  that the light will come to them. I have a feeling none of the board members that made the decision only one Barr are sure as hell not from easttexas. We will more than likely fall as dog hunters one day but until that da y my dogs will catch barrs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  The team and I discussed how after Friday evening catching these barrs how the competion became not fun to us. Why do the competion if we can't enjoy it? My kids future competion hunters will not never see our culture be allowed in competions.  Tony,van dorn,Jason tompson and myself put a once and a life time hunt together this weekend and we are sure glad to share it with people who understand and respect what it is to catch a group of hogs like we did over the weekend.

God almighty guys... I'm a little speachless at the moment! What a haul and experience I bet that was. Great trophy hogs and I truely hope the dogs come out ok. It's a shame that this doesn't open peoples' eyes. Just like Tony said, you can't fix stupid! I would've had fire and smoke coming out of my ears and lightning bolts coming outa my eyes had this been me, and I don't blame ya'll one bit for not wanting to contiue being robbed of an obvious win that should've been yours'. You would think that since the Trail of Tears is a TDHA (Texas Dog Hunters Assoc) supported event, TDHA would've backed barr hogs being accepted since that's part of hog dog hunting and has been for many years. Lets just separate the tournaments now and for good... The ones that will not accept barr hogs should be called boar and sow tournaments... and the real tournaments that accept all hogs that dogs find can keep the name hog hunting tournament. What is funny is that we don't catch barrs where we hunt and I still support ya'll and tournaments accepting barrs because if your dogs hunt and get wrecked like ya'lls did, by God, it's just plain highway robbery that you can't enter them in, if at least to do the dogs justice. Good job guys, and ya'll have my vote 100%!  ;)

Competition or no Competition....A stringer like that with teeth like that... makes a real good argument for barring hogs!

Thanks for the story guys.  Hope all the dogs fully recover.   I hope some of the ones supporting the no Barr hog rules got the win they were hoping for.  Now that the proof has prevailed.    Now I have a question, this is not directed to this team, but others.    Did you'll all get your ribbon for entering?   Did it even the playing field?

Great haul guys, hope all the dogs heal up ok...  Good to have a hand like chance around to take care of your dog.  How is the dog pulling thru so far?

Wish all the other anti-Barr hunter/cutters would speak up and voice their opinions.

24 head this weekend all over 100 lbs 4 really good barrs we turned them back loose cuz we new they didn't take them at this competition  and maid a lot more Barrs for the future. Won it with 1011.00 lbs

Drake is doing ok. He's finally eating and seems to be doing better. We'll see how he progresses. Thanks

Great catch of hogs guys. I been hunting a long time and I know how hard it is to catch that many good hogs in just a short amount of time. Give the dogs (and guys) credit for a job well done.

I do have one question for Chance though.....when you sending 'Mater to Florida???  Seems like all she does is get you in trouble......I can feed her and solve that problem for you.........  ;D

Hope the dogs get well soon. You all put the smack down on some hogs. What really matters is that you all had a awesome performance with the dogs and the amount of trophy hogs you caught!! The rules of no barrs mean nothing!! In my eyes a caught hog is a caught hog, PERIOD!!! Damn Good Job!!!!

i myself dont have much experience with tournaments having only hunted in one but imo the barr hog rule was a way to answer all the crying and bickering from the people who only hunt with what i call the stick and shoot method and that being stick the hog shoot a picture and be gone with it....hog hunting has grown extremely fast and still growing at an alarming rate without people realizing that this was once a way of life and not just sport and barring hogs was a means of population control and feeding families without having to put alot of money into feeding a hog out by lettting them feed theirselves out and that people still practice it and i find its a crying shame that organizations who pride themselves on supporting heritage of working dogs are letting competitions and money get in their way of preserving the ways that these dogs were bred and raised to do.....my hats off to you chance and the rest of you guys for standing up for what you believe.....like you said these are supposed to be HOG DOG competitions and what does a hog dog do when you turn it out....find HOGS be it boar, sow. barr, shoat, pig or whatever as long as at the end of the day they are putting hogs at the end of tracks....btw great hunt guys and i hope the dogs heel up for yall
