Which breed of dogs will pick up older tracks the best? A buddy of mine has a bluetick that will follow the first track to the pig even if there is fresher sign around.

I'm not sure it's so much the breed. I think it's just the dog itself. Just my 02 8)

most hounds.  but jagds pick u tracks that are old too.

I've always been fond of Walker hounds from fox and coyote lines for their ability to push a track. Cant say if they were the coldest nosed dogs in the box but seemed to be able to move a track from start to finish Blazing fast. Some of the more talented ones threw crosses that were only 1/2 or 1/4 walker and still had that ability.  Lots of other big game hound breeds (bluetick, plott, english) that could strike hogs from cold tracks and long distances but the Walkers always crossed better for us.

My buddy told me my Bluetick has a nose that can track a fart from a flea lol

The dog with the best scent and the most receptors in its nose would be the Blood Hound, Black and Tan Coonhound, Redbone Coonhound, Blue Tick Coonhound, Tree Walker Coonhound, Basset hound, beagle, or Plott hound etc. Basically any of the working class hounds that were bred for hunting. These are scent hounds and unlike sight hunters (i.e. labs and bird dogs), almost exclusively use their noses to track a scent.

All dogs can pretty much smell the same...it is there brain tellin gthem how to use it!!!

I watched a animal planet deal and they said ALL canines have the same exact amount of scent receptors. From a coon hound to a chihuahua ;) like underdog said it is just how their brain reacts to the scent that is different

Especially wikipedia.  It's kinda like this, for every scientist and study out there that tells you coffee is good for you, there's a study and a scientist telling you it's bad for you.

water is very good for us and is a necessity...but not enough or too much of it is bad for you...

So smarter dogs are better at tracking?

Years ago there was a drowning in the Parish that I live. They dragged the river with no luck of finding the 2 bodies. The Sheriff Dept.
brought in a water search dog from another Parish. It was a Blood Hound X Lab.  That dog stood like a statue on the deck of a boat while
they idled around. He alerted and found both bodies in a swift river current in 30 feet of water. I aint got a clue how a dogs nose works
but that dog had it. Was very impressive .

I understand BUT, whose research and science do you think is going to be more accurate. A compilation of random people on a public forum or a compilation of a group of scientist whose only purpose for a period of time is to find out the answers to specific questions. I'm not trying to be defensive or anything and I don't think you were trying to belittle me with the comment about everything being true on the internet or TV. I'm just trying to put together some different theories as we are doing on this board right now.

I can't say for sure if all dogs smell the same or not...but genetics has a lot to do whether the dog takes a track or not...the dog might smell it and not take it because it just doesn't excite hin...

to me it's more about how excited a dog gets over a scent.  The natural drive has got to be there to get'm going and fired up.

Yes and no. Not necessarily OR sure absolutely. What they're talking about is the genetic predisposition to take whichever kind of track. I'm not gonna be a good one to explain it but I can give you two examples.

1st. Hunting with CWard one day, I had one of my bitches cast out and come to a track she grinded on that track for 20-30 minutes and it turned up dry after a long run of it. My other bitch an hour later or so took an interest in a track and same deal, ground ground ground on it long time, long distance and eventually came out to the spot where the other bitch had first started earlier. when she hit the spot where she could smell her sister had already checked it, she quit and came back. Could not only smell the track, but she smelled that a dog she trusted had already come up empty on it and came back around to us in a hurry to go hunt some more.


2nd. This plays into the story from above, different dogs, same family though.

These curs took a track at the same time as another fellas plott hound, ground it out real hard, trailed in a good ways, heated it up and burned that sucker down. The curs took it pretty deep from what I gather and had the hog bayed, the hunters got there and as they were tying the hog the owner of the plott said "he's on a different hog. Turns out that he wasn't, he tracked and tracked and tracked and ended up bawling his way right smack into a hog that was already caught and tied.
This is NOT INTENDED TO BE DOWNING HOUNDS AT ALL!! alright?
What I'm saying is the hounds brain tells him not to worry wether another dog has covered it, or what else is happening (like a bay) they are bred and born to take tracks and finish them. This is what they mean about the brain determines the track they'll take

Once again not downing hounds or bragging on curs, these are just anecdotal examples.

 

Out of the dogs I've grown up with we had a redbone pit mix.  Looked like a redbone but was short and bull legged. All my pops friends said he had the nose from hell. He would be running then stop turn his head and bolt.
