me and cody(codyoffroad) met up the other day and went hunting and i noticed how is dogs ranged out alot farther then mine how can i get mine to range farther?
mine only seem to range out like 20 to 30 yards.
any help would be greatly appericiated...

thats a good question... I have never had much luck with it... they either have the hunt in them or not.... If you let the dogs bay, go to the bay, and keep yours on the wheeler and let it watch them and not let it in on it for a few times  it mite bring out some desire in them, id work with one at a time and see if it helps... Its not likely tho, some dogs just dont hunt  ;D

  Sorry, I was just joking around with Elliscounty.  I am sure some people might know how to make a dog range out further, but I don't know the answer. Maybe someone will chime in with some helpful info.

How old are your dogs? Do you think that you have given them the opportunity to reach their full potential?

If not, keep hunting them with rangy type dogs and hopefully they will start going a little farther out each time.

Other than breeeding the hunt, this is the next best thing, and dont let them hunt with another dog that is short range cause they will team up and stay together but if u take one of your dogs with another rangier dog they will eventually start going out with them and MAYBBE get some hunt in them.

I think you need at least one dog to just be rangey.  Then most of the  time the other dogs will roll out with that one.

she is around 18 months she will find hogs but its like a have to run her over the track.

i agree with the others, keep runnin em with a rangy dog, this should help them.  if you got one that just waits around your feet on a bay to happen, leave them at home or get rid of em.  that causes the other dogs to want to hang around or come back to you instaed of huntin.

I think that you can use some training exercizes . like gaurenteed hunting .1st time hobble ahog up letthe dogs watch him get in tall grass, lethim go 20  or 30 yards then let dogs go find! 2nd time let him get ferther 50 or 60 yards, 3rd time 100 yards so on so forth before long they should be using there noses  then they will start to range  better. we do alot of this kind of training durring these summer months. quick training sessionsin the heat!!might not work for all dogs but a good way to get em out from under your feet .JMO .           GOOD LUCK WITH THAT!!!

lol after me complaining we went hunting last night and it was like they drank an energy drink they were hunting at around 100 yards and were hunting like pros ended up baying a hog 300 yards away.
That made my day just seeing them work like that.  :)

I had a cat dog that i got when she was 9 months old and i grabed her by the collar and nearly threw her in the river several times but she was all i had at the time so i held on to her, we went on a hunt down south and caught 15 hogs and she bayed the last one and when i got home i told my bud she had two more hunts and i was done with her, so guess what she did the last hunt CLICKED and she turned into the best hog dog i ever owned, she was a long range find anything type dog ;)

I think that is something you breed for and the next step would be hunting the dog when they are young with dogs that are long range. If you cant find a long range dog it would be best to hunt the dog by itself so it dont pick up short range habits. 99% of the time the young dog you are running with older dogs they will pretty much be what you are hunting them with. No offense but 20 or 30 yards is horrable in my book, mine go that far just to piss and sh*t and then haul a** from there.

depending on where you are hunting long range dogs can get you in a bind, i think if you buy finished dogs you should get a mixture of both, if your hunting a small place, dont bring the long range dogs.

Your dogs do need to range out further than 30 or 40 yrds and they probably just need to be on more pigs more often. If you have a pup try kenneling them up with a long range dog so they get buddy buddy with them. Pup will probably follow that dog more likely than not. Also dont pet the dogs till your done with the hunt or after you catch a pig. When im hunting my dogs are tools not pets. Its time for them to get out and work not time to sit at your ankles trying to get TLC. The TLC comes when they get there job done.

We have "culled" some damn nice dogs. Several of our culls have gone on to be top dogs in their packs. They darn sure weren't junk, but they didn't fit our hunting style at the time. Some may have been too rough, some hunted too far out for the properties we have. I'm not saying we have superdogs or anything, but we have culled some top notch dogs that some folks would love to own. They just didn't fit our program as well as another dog did. That said, some of what we considder our top dogs some of you wouldn't feed. For whatever reason, they produce pork for us and make us happy.

aladatrot we have the same mine set!!! Thats the way it should be. I am just trying to help and give my two cents and I get hammerd but its ok cause I have a better judgment on people on this board and where they draw the line!! What works for me might be a cull to someone eles but I can tell you that the line that I draw is alot high than most!!

I believe that statement to be 100% true.  I'm a FIRM believer that the range a dog hunts is 99% genetic, and 1% not screwing up the other 99%.

It's FAR easier to start with good stock, then concentrate on not screwing them up with the "nurture" side of things than starting with mediocre stock and trying to train into them what should have been there genetically.

In my experience, a rangy hunting dog is also an independant dog and a lot of those attributes can be observed in young pups.
