well I want it to be known I am a semi green.horn.. so im ASKING .. has this.ever worked for anyone.... Im usually the guy who.gets the "bring your bulldogs" invite which is great for me because im just.now.getting the chance to raise my.own HOPEFUL strike.dogs.. 

Which leads me.to.my question anyone ever run one short range strike dog and 2 (or so) athletic/gamey pits on.very small.properties?

I myself have not, but I think it is a good idea.  My dogs go too far and I am thinking I wish I had a couple real short range dogs that would go 2-300 yds and come back.  Ive got some great spots that are too small for me to hunt.

Really about all we have around here is small properties, if youve got 500 acres or better your big time.  We run one or two rough cur dogs.  most of the people are ound here have short range hot nosed dogs.

 I have access to.roughly. 550acres..  and have 2bulldogs who have cawt hogs alone.. no means r.they strike.dogs. just lucked.up.a.few times. . . jus wanted.to see if.any of.you.would.have any cons.or.pros.. thanx

Yeah our hood dogs are pretty short range. We cast em in small areas. I love the idea of running a couple RCDs w my hot nosed gyp! Let us know how it works for you!

I have a short range rough redbone pit that would work for something like that.

Ours dont even stir up a good crap on 500 acres. We are prety fortunate to have several ranches well over the  5 to 20 thousand acre range and have the dogs that are bred to cover every inch of them , but i started with 2 rough close range dogs and caught just as many .

With your 2 rough close ranged dogs do you think they'd have stayed on the smaller properties?

I would say the only differents between good short range and long range dogs is it takes a little longer to cover the same ground. I run different levels of dogs some short some med to what I call long every one has there own opion on what that is. I have seen those short range rang dogs find pigs that longer dogs ran past and seen those short dogs sucking hind tit to catch up just ask around lot of knowledgeable people out there that you can learn from and pick up what will work for ya

  If the place as hogs then you will do fine. Everyone sure has some long range dogs on the WWW.

In the situation u described I think u will do fine. Having a strike dog that will hunt 300 or so will work great. If a dog hunts that range and covers a full circle he will cover about 80ac or so per circle. Regardless of hunting range of a dog if one strikes out running u can get off 500ac fast. This is where the RCD's come in. One bay dog won't normally make one run and when the bulldogs get there it should be caught hog. I don't know if the property u have is woods or mixed pasture but either way it still works.

Start on the downwind side and walk into the wind to give your dogs the best chance to find and catch quick.  If the wind isn't right, try it another day. 

Don't push your luck with property lines.  I don't know about Texas, but archery season is coming up and you don't want to start making deer hunters mad.  Try to find out everything you can about the surrounding properties.  Get an aerial photo and make yourself familiar with your place and the surrounding property.  Valuable information, that might keep you and your dogs out of trouble. 

Walk one dog on a leash, and let one hunt.  Sometimes younger dogs will check in more often and hunt closer, when the other dog is staying with you. 

All you need is a place to park and unload. If it's not close to deer season it's usually not many people in the woods anyway odds are slim of running up on anyone just go hunting. If you run up on anyone tell them how bad them hogs are tearing up your uncles place that y'all had to do something quick

I agree cantex, Bo Pugh I hope you were joking, things like that give hog hunters a bad name, its one thing for you to do it on the down low (not that I personally agree with it but regardless) and not tell anyone anything about it but its another to get online and suggest it to other hunters. Not trying to chew on you or start chit but things like that are no bueno and shouldn't be broadcast on this forum.

Justin I couldnt agree more.  HAVING to jump a fence is one thing, doing it intentionaly is another.  Never know whos reading these.  I know for a fact the game wardens in Fl have been making arrests on people posting picsand bragging on facebook of their illegally harvested animals.

X100 justin. Them comments wont help the hunters in any form or fashion no matter the intensions. It will make it harder for any form of hunting, unless the idea is to screw it up for any1 else and have a monopaly on the land just by blaiming other hunters for the poaching
