Title: New Barrel Cradle Idea! Post by: setxhogdogs on November 02, 2013, 02:43:52 pm First off I'm sure u guys have done this or something similar. I wanted to get my barrels up off the ground with winter coming on soon and the rainy season setting in. My buddy made the suggestion to build cradles. So.......... A couple treated 2x4's later and this is the result. I'm no carpenter but I can read a tape use a hammer and skil saw. Lol This is a simple cheap idea. Works great. I attached the barrels to the cradle using ring shank nails punched through small round sheet metal roofing tabs to keep the nails from pulling through the plastic. The barrels ended up being approximately 1 foot off the ground so even my young pups can hop up into them.

Id also like to see recommendations on covering the barrel opening so that hay or stray can not slide out. The face of my barrels are completely cut out like the pic above and the hay always slides out.
What I like about your set up above is they can be easily moved. Title: Re: New Barrel Cradle Idea! Post by: WayOutWest on November 03, 2013, 10:44:38 am If you have the open barrels like that just take a short 2 x 6 and cut it to the radius of the barrel and screw thru the barrel into it. For the price of a jigsaw you can do them for a long time.

The face of my barrels are completely cut out like the pic above and the hay always slides out. I just bolted 2x6 to the front no sawing. Just bolted to the 2x6 that stops it from rolling. Think I ran some longer screw into the the rim of the barrel too. Then I got some barrels that were closed and when I cut them open I left a section of the top to keep it in. You could put anything on there and just use screw long enough to go through and into the rim. What I like about your set up above is they can be easily moved. Title: Re: New Barrel Cradle Idea!
