Title: fastest and easiest way to tie hogs
Post by: sm159144 on August 18, 2009, 03:42:58 pm
Hey I was wondering if anyone has any certain way they tie their hogs up that is pretty fast and sufficient. A vid would be nice. Just trying to get some new ideas! I use cable ties but the good ones are pretty hard to get off after you tighten em down.

I hate to be the one to state the obvious but the hobbles that any of the suppliers sell are hard to beat on quickness.

FELLOWS, I WORK FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT, AND THE BEST THING I HAVE FOUND TO USE IS FLEX CUFFS. YOU CAN GO AND BUY THEM FROM ANY BELSCO OR OTHER LAW ENFORCEMENT SUPPLY STORES.  THE DOUBLE ONES WORK THE BEST BECAUSE THEY ARE ALREADY MADE UP SO ALL YOU DO IS SLIP THEM ON AND PULL THE STRAP TO TIGHTEN THEM DOWN.  BELIEVE ME THEY HOLD ANY SIZE HOG, THE ONLY BAD THING IS THAT ONCE YOU USE THEM, YOU HAVE TO CUT THEM OFF BUT THEY ARE VERY CHEAP.

Hobbles are a easy no brainer but a pain in the a$$ if you ask me.

I can tie a big hog faster with mule tape than I can hobble one and I dont have to worry about lugging 3 to 5 sets of hobbles around with me in the woods. Unnecessary weight and bulk.

I can put enough mule tape to tie 5 hogs in the watch pocket of my jeans if I need to. And that is only a slight exaggeration. :D
I have friends that carry that many sets of hobbles with them on hunts and to me they look like a lineman for the county looking for a pole to climb! ;D Tool belts with back support and suspenders. Hobbles hanging off of them everywhere! They sure look cool in the woods though. 8)

A hondo, 4 half hitches and a hoowie using one 6 to 8 foot strand of 1/2" mule tape will tie the biggest baddest hog out out there.

We use handcuffs, it is really much easer than trying to tie them. 8)

The fastest way is to have your hunting buddy tie it  while you go to the next bay! ;D

I have used several different types of hobbles and from my experience I found the Snap Hobbles from Ugly Dog Ranch to be my preference.  With these you can hobble each leg individually, making it much easier for one man, and then simply attach each hobble to a center ring.

But I agree that tying a hog is more secure than hobbles.  I only recently learned how to tie a hog properly, and I can probably tie a hog in half the time it would take me to hobble it.  Start with a 6 or 7 foot piece of rope with knots in the tips.  The only knot you need to know is the double half hitch(DHH).   Tie a DHH on left back leg, run your tag end over to the right back leg.  Tie a DHH on right back leg, run your tag end to the right front leg.  Tie a DHH on right front leg, run your tag end over the section of rope connecting the back legs and now pull the tag end under the rope connecting the back legs and up to the left front leg(this should pull the legs together).  Tie a DHH on left front leg.  Done.  I only started with the left for an example .

keep 2 teenage boys with you at all times and just send them to the truck with the hog, no tieing

used it all, rope, muletape, ect.............
being a calf roper i thought i could tie anything with rope and fast but after useing the ugly dog hobbles, I love em
dont get the normal big boar one, make sure you get the extended version, they are 1" bigger on each leg

Cool site Matt!

Just added to my "Favorites" list.
Didnt see a Hondo or a hoowie knot listed though. lol.

I guess a "perfection loop" will work for the hondo and "Round Turn with 2 half hitches" will work for the hoowie. lol

Didnt see a suitable replacement for a hay knot either. :D

Handcuffs are the fastest way I have seen to restrain a hog. Draw back with using handcuffs is that you must clean them after they get muddy or they will not work the next time you use them.
