Post by: sandbank slayer on April 10, 2014, 02:09:44 pm
What size of pig if at all do y'all want your strike to catch? Do you prefer to send a bulldog to a choate? Jw?

Shoulda worded it Alittle better I guess, so for those that do lead a CD, do you want your strike dog to catch at all or just bay a pig don't matter what size.

I want my dogs to catch anything under 100 lbs. I would rather them go ahead and shut down anything smaller than have them bay and it break and run a country mile spending all morning running a 50-75lb pig. The birddogs I run now catch by themselves anything 100lbs and less and sometimes catch up to 150lbs if it doesn't put up much of a fight. Everyone is different but I like walking to a bay and sending the bulldog to a good hog.

I'm right there with you, you have bird dogs doin this? My partner got some gsp but I'm lookin for something of this very nature. I traded for a gyp the other day and really hope this is how she is. If not I'll be lookin again, it's aggravating to chase a choate a mile. Not mad there on pigs just wish they'd let me know it was small

Yea, mine are English pointers though. They are pretty gritty as far as stopping a hog. They absolutely hate for a hog to run, any size. They will catch on his nuts and hold on till he stops and then bay. I really like their style, but the hunt and stamina is a plus as well.

I want mine to bay if it's big enough to walk. I don't like them catching any hog but they will. I would like mine to get out of the way when the bulldogs catch so they don't get cut or crippled. And it's way easier to handle a hog with just one or two bulldogs on it versus 5 currs and 2 bulldogs

I would rather mine just bay , I love it when I show up and my dogs been baying for a hour and the hog is only 10 pounds , I have CDs to catch and prefer a loose baying pack and for them to roll out as soon as I show up with the CDs

More and more I'm really starting to think I may be headed in this direction, I'm happy to catch a pig(big/small) don't matter to me as long as it "oinks".  But crawling through the stickers with a cd to see a dog hammered down on something my lil boy kicks around the back yard gets tiring to say the least.

I want my strike dogs to catch what they can handle without getting killed. It's more where they are catching them. Out in the open or a place where my dogs can move they will catch any good size hog (175-225ibs). In the thick briar laced palmettos a 125-150 with 1 1/2" cutters wi. Make them bay because they cannot effectively move in for a solid catch without taking damage. Have 2dogs on the ground like that hunting together and they will suck up anything!
Now that being said, I am looking at my Gator dog with 15 staples in his armpit up to his shoulder, just recovered from 2 thumb wide pokes that went up each side of his neck 5" under the skin, and 3 hunts before then 52 staples!! I guess he has not figured out the catch what he can handle thing I want from my strike dogs!  >:D >:D

It'd be fine with me if the bulldog never got unsnapped. I like em really rough. I go to catch hogs not listen to the dogs bark. But a bay in open woods is a pretty sight!

If I went just to catch hogs I would run about 6 curs on the ground and have one good knife instead of bulldogs. I like to hear dogs bay hogs

I'm with you if they don't catch little pigs under 100 lbs they gonna be so loose baying that they don't have enough grit to shut down a big hog ? Mite be a long race
