When picking through a litter or searching for a young dog to fill into your program, what are some of the key structural points of a dog that you look at first? What are some flaws that you're willing to look past, and most importantly what are the ones that you absolutely refuse to incorporate in your pack. I know that breeding for inherited hunting traits are always a big strive for dogmen but what about the structure of a dog? I guess one would first have to figure out what their idea of the perfect built dog would look like and then whittle towards that design until coming as close as possible. I've owned some structurally sound dogs with perfect conformation and eye appeal that were culls through and through and I know that looks don't hunt, but.... If I'm keeping a dog on my yard, on my dollars, it had better be physically impressive to me and have as few structural gaps as possible. Just wondering physically what some of you look for in a dog?

First think I look for is size- I prefer medium size dogs.  I wont take the biggest pup.

Second color- I will not accept a pure white cur dog or pure white hound; dogo yes.

Third is feet.  If a pup has bad feet, it is a no for me.

Lastly I look at overall coformation of body type.  I prefer a square build.

I like lots of leg and a small compact body

Healthy straight framed dogs with stream lined bodied shaped for endurance and putting some miles in. Deep chested with good lung capacity.

Legs...with the athletic ability to carry them.

Good on point front end showing tip toe stance while standing still.

Good clean lope with fluid range if motion in rear end....NO BULLDOG WABBLE!

Bow or Hock legs are auto culled. Back end wabble....Gone. Just to hard for dog to compensate when putting in the miles.

Good clean natural athlete. Then build the rest from there.

Perfect example would be a block headed fox hound. Just take off the flag tail and color pattern. Replace it with Yeller and Black.   :laugh:

Good answers all. Much appreciated. Thank You Reuben for posting pics. Awesome Looking specimens that you have. In fact, I would like to See what others call the perfect built dog. Once Again, not looking for the best dog you own or how well they hunt, but would like to see pics from what You all have found in the closest-to-perfect built dog.
