Title: Ammo ?
Post by: charles on June 08, 2014, 03:39:04 pm
For those who have an ar-15 and shoot the federal m193 55gr and the American eagle m855 62gr ammo, which shoots best out of your ars?

Iv got a 1:8 twist 16" bbl and it seems the 55gr holds a tighter grouping than the 62gr. Has anyone else noticed this?

If you get better grouping out of the 62gr, what twist is your bbl?
Iv only shot groupings at 100 yards. How far out have yaw had the best groupings and of which of the 2 types of ammo from above did you get those groupings?

Iv got close too to 3000 rds of the m855 and a little over 3000 rds of the m193 and want input for those of who shoot this particular ammo? I may build another upper receiver assembly just to shoot the m855 ammo or sell it and buy more m193 and or the 55gr green tipped penetrator rounds. I don't need input about other ammo, just the 2 types stated above.

Ok I have shot both I think. Bulk ammo so cant say for 100 percent sure but think. Typically the faster the twist the heavier the bullet needed for best accuracy.   The 62 grain shoots well out if my 1 in 7 twist but shoots 69 gr custom comps the best. The 1in 9 twist shoots both the 55 and 62 about the same neither great but ok for plinking wifes 1in 9 dont like the 62 gr but 55 gr durn near one holes.  From reading and personal shooting the 62 gr is the breaking point between the 1in 9 lighter bullets and the 1in 7 heavier bullets. I have never had or shot a 1 in 8 so also cant comment there.  I want a 1 in 10 for the lightest bullets I can find and crank them up on powder just for the heck of it lol

Actually, i hav a 1:7 twist socom barrel. I thought it was 1:8, but when u said 1:7, i had to go back and review my order to find out which barrel i hav. Either way, like before, the 55gr shoots a better grouping out of mine.

Hum that is unusual but every gun is different and likes different bullets.  My 1in 7 opens up pretty big with 55 grainers but that being said im thinking most of the militarys barrels are 1in 7 right.

M16 barrels are a 1:7, but not 100% sure bout the m4. It too may be a 1:7, or a 1:9, he m4 is a 14.5" while the m16 is a 20", so I would think the m4 should be a slower  twist but again not completely sure. I do agree too, that every weapon is different and likes different ammo. I would like to hot load these a lil more. Do the hotter loads function and group better than factory?

Not necessarily again every barrel is different. I havent kept up but the new production ammo for the military is the 55 gr right?  I would be interested in knowing why they go with a faster twist.

I would figure it to do with the shorter barrel and still having to qualify at 300 meters and they need that fast rate to stabilize out further. The green tip xm855 are  62gr and that's all I ever shot in the army and possibly still used, but I did find some of the green tip in 55grn. May  break open this can of m855 and see if it's green tip and if so, if it groups like the m193, I may go buy a couple more 900rd cans and sell the loose cartons of the American eagle. The loose packs I got are not green tipped, so the extra wt at the front of the tipped rounds may also help with Flt stabilization with the heavier round. I don't know. Maybe this civilian eagle ammo ain't the same as the military, but it says m855 so I would figure it would be the same as the military since American eagle is made federal/lake city

Going off memory but the slower the twist wont stabalize the longer heavier rounds and they wont stabilize in air but the fast twist is to fast for the faster moveing lighter rounds and it over spins them and causes the eradiac spreads. Now this is all hear say but it makes since in my pea brain lol.

Naw, ur right. But the 1:7 is slower aint it? I just contradicted myself too in 2 different replys. Dang sleep deprivation. If the 1:7 is faster iv got my rates backwards. Iv nvr ran into this issue with these lighter rounds being so unstable. In the army, i didnt care, i wasnt directly paying for the ammo and nvr qualed below 36 outa 40, but buying the ammo now, i wanna get the best round for my $. It also may have to do with this ar being newly built and tight fitting. Iv only ran bout 300rds through it so it might not broke in yet

Get a june issue of american rifleman. It has a interesting and informative article on this vary issue.  They somewhat said what I expected in the military questions but I dont understand why I would want the best accuracy possiable across the board for the military but im just a dumb butt who aint a lieing politician. Ill get off my rant now.
