Title: New pups are here! Post by: Nannyslayer on September 01, 2014, 03:42:38 pm My new pups are finally on the ground. It's an interesting cross from dogs on our yard. Both parents are our best dogs, so hopefully these pups will be what we are hoping they will be. Have the nose and mouth of the sire and the speed and grit of the mama.
Not a great pic, was trying to move them all to the box from the house and mama kept grabbing them and putting them back in the house. Once they get through a week, when I let mama out for a little exercise I'll snap a better pic. Here are the hammer cats. Title: Re: New pups are here! Post by: Nannyslayer on December 08, 2015, 03:08:58 pm Well, the pups are doing great. I'm ashamed to say, I sure as heck don't have a picture of them now that they are grown. They turned out to be big dogs, and the 3 I have are completely different looking. One male is solid white with a black head, one male is red, and one is leopard. All 3 different personalities but all 3 have one thing in mind, catchin a pig.
This past sunday we went out to a spot where the hogs have tore up a guys hay field. Casted the pups and my 2 older dogs and it wasn't anytime that had one found. Hog went about .93 on the garmin and bayed up. I was on foot, and was able to get to the bay quick, and they had this big sucker caught. I like loose bayin dogs but these pups are as catchy as they come, which in turn has my older dogs catchin. They all back up just long enough I was able to shoot the pig without any danger of hittin a dog. But man when the gun shoots, you better put a kill shot on it, because they will jump on em after the shot. They are 16 months old now, and doing excellent. I plan on making this exact same litter the next time the mama comes into heat. (pup in the pic isn't one of them, just a pup in training, learnin the ropes) (http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee299/nannyslayer/Mobile%20Uploads/image_1.jpeg) (http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee299/nannyslayer/Mobile%20Uploads/image_2.jpeg) (http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee299/nannyslayer/Mobile%20Uploads/image_4.jpeg) After we got that one down, and another small sow, a guy with us hollered on the cb and said there was some really fresh rootin in another hay field and to bring my hound up and see if he can smell it. Kicked the older dog and a pup out and they left, making about a 350 yard circle and locked up bayed at 90 yards. Bay broke, sent another couple dogs to em and the race was on. This ole sow had her shoes on and took em for about a 3 mile circle and ended up coming back to almost where they jumped her and a guy hunting with us ended the race. A good way to end the day. (http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee299/nannyslayer/Mobile%20Uploads/image_3.jpeg) I'm really enjoying this litter. They cast hunt, they hunt hard, good noses and move a track like no other. Out of the 3 pups, 2 are silent mouth, 1 open mouth. In this big country up here, open dogs don't bother me a bit. My main hound is as open as they come and he stops a lot of pigs for us. Post by: BriarBay on December 08, 2015, 07:35:44 pm Nanny, I have the exact same cross, cat X treeing walker, 3 females. 2 leopard and 1 black and brindle. I'm glad to hear that yours are doing good. Mine are about 15 months old and I can't wait till January (after deer season) to get them into the woods on a regular basis. They have done good in the pen, and also trailed and caught hogs released from traps. I don't have many opportunities to send them with finished dogs cause I don't have any myself.. But they seem to be coming along pretty good now.

Title: Re: New pups are here! Post by: Nannyslayer on December 08, 2015, 10:06:46 pm Briarbay, those are some fine lookin critters.
So far this cross is everything we hoped for. They range out good and are always on the move and hunting hard. I like to cast hunt so they are working out perfect. Title: Re: New pups are here! Post by: Hollowpoint on December 10, 2015, 12:27:42 pm You gotta love it when a plan comes together.
Title: Re: New pups are here! Post by: Nannyslayer on December 13, 2015, 09:37:06 pm Well, gettin these dudes to stand still in the woods is a challenge but after a good chase and them catchin a small sow I was able to grab a couple pics.

Title: Re: New pups are here! Post by: Nannyslayer on December 22, 2015, 10:45:38 pm Although I'd like to give the pups a lot of credit for this boar, it was mostly their daddy that did the job on him. Had a good day hunting Sunday. Once again the pups did good but my male walker stuck with this ole boar for 2 hours and held him bayed by himself for the better part of 45 minutes. Ended up breaking bay but I was able to send the pups and a couple of rough catahoulas to the race and they had him shut down in no time. They had him caught but the Bulldogs just sealed the deal. Heck of a hunt.
(http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee299/nannyslayer/Mobile%20Uploads/image_10.jpeg) Here was the total for the day. The first one we caught the big white pup struck on first and the rest fell in. They had the smaller boar caught within 450 yards of where I casted them. (http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee299/nannyslayer/Mobile%20Uploads/image_11.jpeg) Title: Re: New pups are here! Title: Re: New pups are here! Post by: Reuben on December 23, 2015, 04:53:58 am nannyslayer...those pups are looking good...I really liked the puppy pictures of the red pup with the white socks and that white pup with the black spot on his lower back because they had that walker look to them...how are those 2 doing?
how many did you keep and how do you rate them against each other? Title: Re: New pups are here! The white one is doing the best with the red pup right behind him. White one is fast on track and will put teeth in a hog to stop him. The red one hunts better but isn't as quick on track is is much looser baying. The catahoula colored one is fast and extremely gritty but right now won't stick a track as long as the other 2 while he's by himself. He will stay right with another dog though. Had 9 pups in the litter and lost one at 2 days old. So out of the 8 left, 4 has made dogs. I have 3 and a guy that hunts with me has a female that's doing really well. I'm pretty happy with those odds out of a litter. Title: Re: New pups are here! Post by: Reuben on December 23, 2015, 05:58:18 pm good deal...those 2 pups caught my eye...they looked like miniature hunting dogs in the making... :)

Title: Re: New pups are here! Post by: Nannyslayer on December 25, 2015, 12:07:35 am That spook dog sure is good looking, he looks very structurally sound. Is he real catchy? Yes he is. He will bay for a short period then gets really catchy. Title: Re: New pups are here! Post by: Nannyslayer on January 04, 2016, 09:56:55 pm Well they finally found a sure enough bad dude. 200 lb hog that spun like a top and the teeth to do some damage. I think the white pup will recover but it's going to take awhile.

Post by: Nannyslayer on May 26, 2016, 03:06:56 pm Sad to say today that I lost one of the pups to a boar. Gus (red dog with socks) met his match today. He was one heck of a dog while I had the chance to hunt behind him.
Title: Re: New pups are here! Post by: TheRednose on May 26, 2016, 03:21:01 pm dang man sorry to hear that. I like the way he looked the most based on the pic's you posted. Hopefully his brothers will carry on where he left off.

Title: Re: New pups are here! Post by: Nannyslayer on June 13, 2017, 10:52:18 pm Another year in the books with the pups. They did excellent. I love to raise a dog and watch them progress.
Mama dog came into heat last week, so we put our male walker in the pen with her. He bred her 3 times, so August 4rth, we should have this exact cross again. First litter was 9 pups and 2 have made the cut. Hoping that 3-4 can make the cut this next litter (if she has enough), but you just never know. Going to keep hunting them cast type hunting, and hopefully they can stick a track and finish it quick like the 2 I have now out of the first litter. |
