I got some hogs today and there in the 50 pound range. Is that to old to cut ? I'd like to castrate them and raise for meat. Got 7 dang hogs and only one was a female. Just my luck. Thank yall in advance for any advice.

You can cut em at any age. It shouldn't stress em bad at that size.

we castrated them at 200 plus after they bred the sows...no problem

Thank ya sir...I worked at a hog farm a long time ago and the lady who would cut them was spraying what I think is iodine on there sack when she finished. Does that sound right? Should I do it? I've never cut any before... we dont bar them in the woods where I can hunt. If I was caught letting hogs go I'd be banned from the property.

I have cut them from 10 pds to 300+ pds

we used to splash on some turpentine after the cuts...and keep the mud hole with enough water to keep the mud hole muddy...but I bet cut heal is better by a long shot...

I've never done it so this is going to be an experience for me. The lady I saw do it was a pro. She would slam on of those hogs between her legs, make 2 cuts, pop out, spray off and send him on down the road in less than 10 seconds. She asked me if I wanted to try. I said no but now I wish I had of done it. 

You can make the incision and and pull the testicles out manually which stretches the cords and this pinches the blood flow off before the cut. Kinda like the umbiblucal cord on pups.

Or you can just cut them which does nothing to stem the bloid flow...

Or some emasculatirs have a crimping mechanism as well...

You could achieve the same result by crimping hard with some good wide pliers before the cut. This is only the achieve a quick seal off and reduce blood loss.

When stretching I mean it a point in cord before and after cut stretching the tissue out to a bottleneck so to speak before the cut to pinch off bleeding

Same principle as a b!tch does naturally on the umbiblucal cord on a pup by stretching and and crimping (chewing)

Try and stretch all the slack out first before this as its rather long and you want it to draw back up neat in the sack

Might be a little much for me..haha.. might pay me somebody to do it. Id hate to ruin/kill a good looking bunch of hogs.

you can do it  :) my grand pa showed me how to castrate,squeeze the sack as you make the incision to make the testicle pop out of the smallest hole as needed.make the incision at the lower end af sack so it can drain.when we cut the cord we leave a small bit of meat on the end of cord so the vessels have split into smaller capillaries resulting in less bleeding.i dont kno how they dont get infected because they always sit there back side in the mud for a week or so.
(use a razor blade and wear gloves)

If u want a hands on demo call ur county extension agent. They should know how to do it and it will help give them numbers which helps them keep a job.

Wild hogs ain't gonna put on weight like a domestic hog. Better off buying a domestic hog and fatten it up. Turn those wild one loose to hunt another day.

it is simple as 123...

1. make the cuts big enough to pop out the testicle and low enough to drain itself when the pig is walking around...

2. their is a membrane that surrounds the testicle...cut this open and pull the testicle out until a little resistance is felt and this is pulling the cords out.

3. cut the cords close to the pig.

4. spray some cut heal on the cuts

I have done this a few times as a youngster and it was easy enough just use a razor sharp knife...we used turpentine or kerosene back in those days...
Fifty pound pigs should heal pretty quick and the weather is cooling off as well...that is in your favor...

I always scrape the cord with the knife rather than cut it. When I was taught it, was told it help bleeding and healing.

That's the way I was taught too Cajun, to scrape them chords instead of just cutting them off in one cut.

Georgia hawgs , if it was me, I'd cut them all in my yard and when I got done I'd open the gate and let everyone of them go even the sow too. Then I'd go to town and get me a pack of pork chops and cook them and think about catching one of them big barrs when they got big.

There are some videos im sure. But I don't have Internet at my house.  I just use the data on my phone and I have to dang near wrap aluminum foil around my ass and climb on top of the house to get reception.  We live in the sticks. But when I get the chance I will surely be looking some up
